Pray Without Ceasing — The Road as Holy Ground

"Pray without ceasing."
1 Thessalonians 5:17 · Tim Keller · John Calvin · Institutes of the Christian Religion
✦ Tim Keller · On Calvin and Daily Prayer

Like many other believers, I've always sought to have a time of devotion and prayer every morning. And like most other believers I have found it to be a struggle to be consistent. Imagine my surprise when I came across a place in John Calvin's Institutes where he argued that when it comes to daily prayer, once is not enough.

Calvin points to the exhortation to "pray without ceasing" and says that every Christian should aspire to pray to God constantly through the day. But — our weakness is such that it has to be supported by many aids, and our sluggishness such that it needs to be goaded. It is fitting that each of us should set apart certain hours for this exercise.

✦ The Honesty of the Saints

What strikes first in this passage is not the prescription but the admission. Tim Keller — one of the most disciplined theological minds of his generation. John Calvin — the architect of Reformed theology, a man of extraordinary intellectual and spiritual rigor. And both of them say plainly: this is hard. Consistency is a struggle. We are weak and sluggish. Not as confession of failure — as description of the human condition before God.

Paul's command — pray without ceasing — is not a rebuke to those who fail. It is a vision of what the prayerful life aspires toward: a soul so attuned to God that prayer becomes the atmosphere rather than an appointment. Calvin understood this was the goal — and also understood that most souls need scaffolding to get there. The appointed hour is not the destination. It is the practice that forms the destination in us, slowly, faithfully, over years.

Five years of rising before dawn in Portugal. The appointed hour kept. And now the motorhome — and a new teacher arrives. Since it's difficult to set times while being on the road, I wholly trust the Holy Spirit to inspire me as I go. This is not a lesser discipline. It is a more advanced one. The soul so formed by years of faithful practice that the appointed hour has become interior — carried invisibly, wherever the road leads. The Holy Spirit as timekeeper. Calvin would approve. 🙏

"The appointed hour is not the destination — it is the practice that forms the destination in us."

Certain Hours

Calvin's prescription: set apart certain hours. Not because the hour is holy in itself — but because our weakness needs support and our sluggishness needs goading. The appointed hour forms the interior that eventually prays without ceasing.

🚐

The Road as Sanctuary

The motorhome changes the hour but not the posture. Almodôvar yesterday. Olhão today. The Holy Spirit travels as navigator. Every place they park becomes holy ground — because the one who steps out is already in prayer.

🕊️

The Spirit as Timekeeper

Trust the Holy Spirit to inspire as you go. Five years of faithful morning devotions have formed an interior compass. The discipline did its work — and now the Spirit leads the hours. Pray without ceasing, from Olhão to wherever He leads next.

✦ A Oração do Senhor · Matthew 6:9 · The Fountain of All Prayer Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

✦ Not a Formula — A Fonte

Jesus did not give His disciples a theology of prayer. He gave them a fonte — a spring to drink from. Every clause its own world, its own depth, its own daily weight.

Hallowed be Thy Name — before any petition, worship. Character before request. The soul oriented before it asks for anything. Thy Will be done — the Potter's hands trusted before our own. On earth as it is in Heaven — the road, the motorhome, Olhão, every destination, brought under His will before the engine starts.

Give us this day our daily bread — not tomorrow's, not next week's. Today. The manna in the wilderness fell one day at a time. The pilgrim on the road receives provision for the day she is in. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive — the 500 denari soul cannot pray this line carelessly. She who was forgiven everything cannot withhold forgiveness from others. This clause is her testimony compressed into seven words.

Deliver us from evil — not our own strength, not our own wisdom, not five years of faithful practice. His deliverance. His kingdom. His power. His glory. Forever. The prayer that begins with the Father ends with the Father — and everything in between is held in His hands. 🙏

✦ A Pilgrim's Prayer · From the Road · March 8, 2026

Lord, keep us safe on every road — the mapped ones and the ones only You can see. Let the motorhome go where You lead, and let every place we park become holy ground. Continue to inspire, to prompt, to guide. You are the timekeeper on this journey. We are in Your hands. Amen. 🙏
