Many men are prejudiced against religion during their youthful period of revolt against authority. Listen to an ancient father talking with his sons — not commanding, but pleading. Not imposing law, but offering the accumulated wealth of a life lived before God.
Wisdom is the principal thing. Not wealth. Not power. Not security. Not even happiness in the ordinary sense. Wisdom first — and everything else follows like a crown that settles on the head of the one who pursued the right thing.
✦ Not Command — Gift
Solomon sits down with his sons and does not thunder. He pleads. He invites. He says — I was once where you are. Tender. Beloved. Young. And my father taught me. And I am passing it on now, not as law but as love. The wisdom he offers is not abstract theology. It is the compressed wealth of a life lived before God — offered to the next generation with open hands.
Fosdick notes that many young hearts push back against what they are given — not because the gift is bad but because receiving feels like submission. The youthful revolt against authority mistakes the gift for a cage. And so the young soul wanders — into false freedoms, into pleasures that lose their taste, into the painful experience of finding that everything promised by the world delivers far less than it costs. The passing through is real. The pain is real. But it is a passing through — not a destination. 🙏
This is a message from a father to his son — but it is a message very alive to me now, that I am not young. Surely if anyone has been a youthful atheist like I have, it was an experience full of pain to be passed through.
O God, we want a heart to speak to, a heart who understands, a friend to whom we can turn, a breast on which we may lean. Our freedom has proved false, our pleasures have lost their zest, our sins — how we hate them. Thank You Lord for delivering us, for we lost all hope in ourselves. 🙏
✦ The Pain That Was a Passing Through
The youthful atheist — not as a theological category, not as an intellectual position, but as a lived experience full of pain. The freedom that proved false. The pleasures that lost their zest. The sins that were not pleasurable in retrospect but hateful — genuinely, deeply hateful, with the hatred that only comes from knowing better and having done it anyway.
And that prayer — it arose from inside that pain. O God, we want a heart to speak to. This is what the wandering soul could not find anywhere else. Not in philosophy, not in freedom, not in the pleasures that promised everything. A heart. Someone who understands. A breast on which to lean. The longing was always there. The atheism was never the absence of the longing — it was the misdirection of it. Augustine knew: our heart is restless until it rests in Thee. The restlessness was the proof all along. 🙏
Thank You Lord for delivering us — for we lost all hope in ourselves. This is the 500 denari soul in its rawest form. Not the soul that managed to be good enough. The soul that lost all hope in herself — and found that was exactly the right place to arrive. Because when hope in self is finally exhausted, hope in Him has room to breathe. Solomon's crown of wisdom is not placed on the young atheist's head. It is placed on the delivered one's — after the pain, after the passing through, after the losing of all hope in herself. That is when wisdom finally has somewhere to land.
"We lost all hope in ourselves — and that was exactly the right place to arrive."
The 500 Denari Soul · From the Canal du Midi✦ We Have the Mind of Christ
This is the miracle that completes the journey. The one who once had no heart to speak to — now has the mind of Christ. The one who wandered in false freedom — now thinks with the thoughts of the One who is Freedom itself. The youthful atheist who searched for wisdom in every wrong place — now has been given, as gift, the very mind of the One in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Not by achievement. Not by self-improvement. Not by eventually becoming wise enough on her own terms. By gift. The same free gift as always — 500 denari forgiven, the mind of Christ given, the crown of wisdom placed on the head of the one who lost all hope in herself and found Him waiting there. Forsake her not and she will preserve you. Love her and she will keep you. She did not find wisdom. Wisdom found her. 🙏
The Principal Thing
Not wealth, not power, not security. Wisdom first — and the crown follows. Solomon pleads, not commands. The accumulated wealth of a life before God, offered with open hands to the next generation. Get wisdom. With all your getting — get understanding.
The Passing Through
The youthful atheist — full of pain, not a destination. False freedom. Pleasures losing their zest. The longing was always there, misdirected. The restlessness was the proof. O God, we want a heart to speak to. And He was there — waiting for the hope in self to be exhausted.
The Mind of Christ
We have the mind of Christ. Not earned — given. The one who searched in all the wrong places now thinks with the thoughts of the One who is Wisdom itself. The crown placed not on the young atheist's head — but on the delivered one's. After the passing through. By gift.
