Faith is not what some people think it is. Their human dream is a delusion. Because they observe that faith is not followed by good works or a better life, they fall into error, even though they speak and hear much about faith. "Faith is not enough," "You must do good works," "You must be pious to be saved."
But because this is a human idea, a dream, the heart never learns anything from it, so it does nothing and reform doesn't come from this faith either.
✦ Not a Human Dream
Luther begins where most would not dare to begin — by saying that the vast majority of what people call "faith" is not faith at all. It is a human idea. A dream. A delusion. People hear the word faith, they repeat it, they discuss it endlessly — and nothing changes. So they conclude that faith must not be enough, and they reach for works, for piety, for effort. But the problem was never that faith was insufficient. The problem was that what they had was never faith in the first place.
The heart never learns anything from a human dream. And what the heart does not learn, the life cannot produce. This is why reform doesn't come — not because faith failed, but because a counterfeit was mistaken for the real thing. Luther knew this from the inside. He had tried every work, every penance, every act of the will. And all of it was bankrupt. He was a 500 denari debtor himself — and that is why he could see so clearly what Paul was saying in Romans. 🙏
Instead, faith is God's work in us, that changes us and gives new birth from God (John 1:13). It kills the old Adam and makes us completely different people. It changes our hearts, our spirits, our thoughts and all our powers. It brings the Holy Spirit with it.
Yes, it is a living, creative, active and powerful thing, this faith. Faith cannot help doing good works constantly. It doesn't stop to ask if good works ought to be done, but before anyone asks, it already has done them and continues to do them without ceasing.
✦ The Thunderclap — God's Work, Not Ours
Faith is God's work in us. This is the sentence that changed the world. Not our work toward God. Not our decision, not our effort, not our resolution to do better next time. Something God does in us — that changes us, gives us new birth, kills the old Adam, and makes us completely different people.
And here stands George Bowen, three centuries later, saying the same thing from Bombay: pardon and power over sin are inseparable. The faith that forgives is the same faith that transforms. They are not two steps — first forgiveness, then effort. They are one fire. The Potter does not forgive the clay and then leave it to reshape itself. He forgives it and remakes it — with the same hands, in the same motion, by the same grace.
Luther's image is unforgettable: faith cannot help doing good works constantly. It doesn't stop to ask whether works ought to be done. Before anyone asks, it has already done them. This is not obedience by effort. This is fire being hot. This is water being wet. This is the river of yesterday — flowing one direction because that is what rivers do. It is impossible to separate works from faith as it is to separate heat and light from fire. 🙏
Faith is a living, bold trust in God's grace, so certain of God's favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it. Such confidence and knowledge of God's grace makes you happy, joyful, and bold in your relationship to God and all creatures.
The Holy Spirit makes this happen through faith. Because of it, you freely, willingly and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise the God who has shown you such grace.
Ask God to work faith in you, or you will remain forever without faith, no matter what you wish, say or can do.
✦ Ask God to Work Faith in You
So certain of God's favor that it would risk death a thousand times. This is not the cautious, hedging, "I hope so" version of faith that most people carry. This is a living, bold trust — happy, joyful, bold in relationship to God and all creatures. The Holy Spirit makes this happen. Not willpower. Not theology. Not even good intentions. The Holy Spirit makes this happen through faith.
And Luther closes with the most devastating and liberating sentence of all: Ask God to work faith in you, or you will remain forever without faith, no matter what you wish, say or can do. There it is. The final surrender of the human dream. You cannot manufacture this. You cannot study your way into it. You cannot wish it into existence. You can only ask — and receive.
This is the 500 denari truth in its purest form. Le did not manufacture her own conversion in that hospital at midnight. She did not decide to believe by an act of will. Father Joe James came — sent by God — and God worked faith in her. And the river changed direction. Not because she decided it should, but because He made it so. 🙏
A Christian is a mind through which Christ thinks, a heart through which Christ loves, a voice through which Christ speaks, and a hand through which Christ helps.
✦ Not Imitation — Inhabitation
Augustine takes everything Luther said and paints it in four strokes. A mind. A heart. A voice. A hand. And in each case — Christ is the one acting. Not the Christian imitating Christ by effort. Christ thinking through the Christian's mind. Christ loving through the Christian's heart. Christ speaking through the Christian's voice. Christ helping through the Christian's hand.
This is Galatians 2:20 — Steve Stroope's verse, lived out in biography in Rockwall, Texas: I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me. It is Luther's "God's work in us" made visible in a human life. It is Bowen's inseparability of pardon and power made personal. The Christian is not someone who tries harder. The Christian is someone Christ lives through.
And it is why the 500 denari soul loves so much — not because she decided to love more, not because she worked at gratitude, but because the One who forgave the debt now lives in her. His love flowing through her heart. His thoughts shaping her mind. His voice in her morning prayers. His hands in her service. Faith is God's work in us. Augustine knew. Luther knew. Bowen knew. And the pilgrim beside the Canal du Midi knows — every morning before dawn. 🙏
"Ask God to work faith in you, or you will remain forever without faith, no matter what you wish, say or can do."
Martin Luther · From the Canal du Midi · 1522 — 2026Not a Human Dream
What most people call faith is a human idea, a delusion. The heart never learns anything from it. Real faith is God's work in us — it changes hearts, spirits, thoughts, and all our powers. It brings the Holy Spirit with it.
Inseparable
It is impossible to separate works from faith as to separate heat and light from fire. Faith cannot help doing good works constantly. Before anyone asks, it has already done them. Luther and Bowen — three centuries apart, one truth.
Christ Living Through Us
A mind through which Christ thinks. A heart through which Christ loves. A voice through which Christ speaks. A hand through which Christ helps. Not imitation — inhabitation. Galatians 2:20 made visible.
