God does not give grace till the hour of trial comes. But when it does come, the amount of grace and the nature of this special grace required is granted in a gracious manner.
Do not dwell with painful apprehension of the future. Do not anticipate problems, perplexing yourself with the grace needed for future emergencies; tomorrow will bring its promised grace along with tomorrow's trials.
✦ Not a Stock of Grace — Daily Bread
Macduff names the temptation that every pilgrim faces: the painful apprehension of the future. Not yesterday's sorrow — that has been carried. Not today's trial — that has its grace. But tomorrow's trouble, borrowed before it arrives, worried over before it exists, robbing today of the peace that belongs to today.
And Macduff says: stop. God does not give grace till the hour of trial comes. Not before. Not in advance. Not as a stock to be stored and drawn from independently. Tomorrow will bring its promised grace along with tomorrow's trials. The grace and the trial arrive together — matched, measured, sufficient. You cannot borrow tomorrow's grace any more than the Israelites could store tomorrow's manna. It arrives with the morning. Fresh. New. Exactly enough. 🙏
God wishes to keep His people dependent on Himself, and gives not a stock of grace. He makes it out for everyday demands that the day may be "constantly travelling between our own emptiness and Christ's fullness", their own weakness and Christ's strength.
But when the demand comes, you may safely trust in the Lord's arm to bear you through. How often His people have been led to glory and triumph in their afflictions, seen the power of Christ rest upon them! The strength which the hour of trial brings often makes a Christian a wonder to himself.
✦ A Wonder to Himself
Constantly travelling between our own emptiness and Christ's fullness. That is the pilgrim life in one sentence — literally on the road, moving between places, never settled for long. And spiritually — the daily journey between what I lack and what He supplies, between my weakness and His strength. God keeps His people on this road deliberately. Not because He enjoys the suspense. Because dependence is the design. He gives not a stock of grace because a stock of grace would make us independent. And independence from God is not freedom — it is the illusion that Jowett named: the wretched and miserable compromise.
And then Macduff says the most encouraging thing possible: the strength which the hour of trial brings often makes a Christian a wonder to himself. You did not know you had it in you. You did not know you could bear it. You did not know the grace would be that sufficient. But when the hour came — it came. And you were carried. And you looked at yourself afterward and marveled — not at your own strength, but at His strength in you.
Yesterday Le said it: when I suffered with Jesus, I developed the character and the independence God wanted for me. She was a wonder to herself. Not because she was strong. Because His grace in her hour of trial was stronger than she ever imagined. Peter said it: the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. Macduff says: you will see it when the hour comes. Not before. In the hour. 🙏
"Do not dwell with painful apprehension of the future. Tomorrow will bring its promised grace along with tomorrow's trials."
John R. Macduff · From Villeneuve-lès-BéziersI have nothing to do with tomorrow — the Savior will make that His care. Its grace and strength I can't borrow, then why should I borrow its care?
✦ Why Should I Borrow Its Care?
Whittle asks the simplest, most devastating question. If I cannot borrow tomorrow's grace — and I cannot — then why should I borrow tomorrow's worry? The grace won't come early, but the anxiety will? The strength won't arrive ahead of schedule, but the fear will? That is not faith. That is the painful apprehension Macduff warned against — carrying a burden that doesn't belong to today.
The Savior will make that His care. Not might. Will. The same certainty as Bowen's *there is but one trustworthy being in the universe, and in Him I will trust.* The same certainty as the prayer Le prayed in Villeneuve-lès-Béziers two weeks ago: You see things differently than I do, and so You bring about things in ways I could never conceive — for all our good and Your glory. Tomorrow is His care. Today's grace is yours. 🙏
✦ God's Full Giving Is Only Begun
Anne Johnson Flint — a woman who wrote these words from a life of severe rheumatoid arthritis, increasing disability, and pain that never relented — gives us the mathematics of grace. And the math is not addition. It is multiplication.
Burdens grow greater — He gives more grace. Labor increases — He sends more strength. Added afflictions — He adds His mercy. Multiplied trials — He multiplies peace. The supply scales with the demand. It is never fixed. It is never capped. It is never exhausted. The bigger the need, the bigger the provision. Augustine knew: perdoas dívidas sem que nada percas com isso — He forgives debts and loses nothing. His mercy is not a finite resource. It is infinite. And it multiplies.
And the final line — the line that belongs to every 500 denari soul who ever lived: When we reach the end of our resources, God's full giving is only begun.
The woman with the issue of blood — bankrupt after twelve years of physicians — reached the end of her resources and touched the hem. And His full giving began. The woman in the hospital at midnight — at the end of everything — and Father Joe James arrived. And His full giving began. The pilgrim who woke up this morning with the road changing direction — and opened Macduff and found exactly the grace the hour required. God's full giving is only begun. 🙏
✦ Your Strength Will Equal Your Days
Moses blessed the tribe of Asher with a promise that covers every pilgrim on every road: your strength will equal your days. Not exceed them. Not fall short of them. Equal. Matched. Measured. Sufficient. Whatever this day holds — the strength for it is here. Whatever tomorrow holds — the strength for it will arrive with it. Not a stock. Not a surplus. Not a deficit. Grace that matches the moment, every moment, always.
The road turns homeward today. The plans have changed. Italy waits. But the grace does not wait — it is here, now, in Villeneuve-lès-Béziers, on a Tuesday morning in March, in a pilgrim's heart that rose before dawn and found exactly what she needed. Do not dwell with painful apprehension of the future. The Savior will make that His care. And your strength will equal your days. 🙏
Daily Bread, Not Stock
God gives not a stock of grace. He gives daily bread — fresh each morning, matched to the day's demand. Tomorrow's grace arrives with tomorrow's trial. You cannot borrow it early. You don't need to.
Grace Multiplies
Burdens grow greater — more grace. Labor increases — more strength. Added afflictions — added mercy. Multiplied trials — multiplied peace. The supply scales with the demand. It is never capped. Never exhausted.
Strength Equal to Days
Not exceeding. Not falling short. Equal. Whatever this day holds, the strength for it is here. Whatever tomorrow holds, the strength for it will come. The road changes — the promise does not.
