Today is dedicated to my favorite — Psalm 18. 🙏

"I love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies."
Psalm 18:1–3 · NKJV

✦ I Love You, Lord

David begins — not with a request, not with a complaint, not with a theological statement — but with a declaration of love. I love You, Lord, my strength. Three words before the theology begins. Three words that contain the entire psalm. Everything that follows — the rock, the fortress, the deliverer, the shield, the stronghold — flows from those three words. I love You.

And then the names pour out — not as a list to be memorized but as a flood of gratitude from a man who has been rescued so many times that one name is not enough. Rock. Fortress. Deliverer. Refuge. Shield. Horn of salvation. Stronghold. Seven names. Seven facets of the same God. Each one a different angle on the same rescue. And David has lived every one of them — in the wilderness, on the battlefield, in the cave, on the run. Each name earned. Each name proven. 🙏

"In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, and my cry came before Him, even to His ears."
Psalm 18:6 · NKJV
✦ From Le's Heart

He heard my voice — out of all the noises of the world, He heard my voice. 🙏

✦ Out of All the Noises of the World

David cried. From distress. From the bottom. From the place where the deep waters were rising and the enemies were closing in and the situation was beyond human rescue. He cried out. Not a polished prayer. Not a carefully worded petition. A cry — raw, desperate, the sound of a soul that has nowhere else to turn.

And the cry reached Him. He heard my voice from His temple. From the temple — from the dwelling place of the Most High, from the throne room of the universe — He heard. The voice of one soul. One cry. One distress. Out of all the noises of the world — all the prayers, all the cries, all the seven billion voices rising simultaneously from every corner of the earth — He heard this one.

My cry came before Him, even to His ears. David says it with astonishment — as though he still cannot believe it. The cry traveled. From the distress to the temple. From the earth to the throne. From the mouth of the desperate to the ears of the Almighty. It arrived. It was received. It was heard. Not lost in the noise. Not drowned out by louder voices. Not dismissed as too small or too broken or too unworthy. Heard. 🙏

"He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me."
Psalm 18:16–17 · NKJV

✦ He Reached Down

He reached down from on high. The direction matters. Down. From on high — from the temple, from the throne, from the place where the infinite God dwells in unapproachable light — He reached down. The stooping of the Prince. The God who bends. The hand that descends into the deep waters where the drowning soul is going under.

And took hold of me. Not waved from a distance. Not shouted instructions on how to swim. Took hold. The grip of the hand that holds the universe — closed around one drowning soul. Personal. Physical. Undeniable. He drew me out of deep waters. The deep waters — the place where the feet cannot touch the bottom, where the current is stronger than the swimmer, where the soul goes under for the last time. He drew me out.

He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes who were too strong for me. David names the truth that every honest soul must name: the foes were too strong for me. Not almost too strong. Not barely too strong. Too strong. The enemies that surrounded — the debt, the sin, the valley, the darkness, the powers that were beyond human capacity to fight — they were too strong. And the rescue came not because David was strong enough. It came because the One who reached down was stronger than everything that held David under. 🙏

"They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me."
Psalm 18:18–19 · NKJV

✦ Because He Delighted in Me

They confronted me in the day of my disaster. Not on a good day. Not when the defenses were up and the strength was full. In the day of disaster. The worst day. The day everything collapsed. The day the foes chose to strike — because that was when the soul was weakest, most vulnerable, most alone.

But the Lord was my support. The smallest word in the sentence — but — carries all the weight. They confronted me. But. The disaster was real. But. The enemies were powerful. But. The Lord was my support. The but of the gospel — the word that turns every disaster into a deliverance.

He brought me out into a spacious place. Out of the deep waters — into spaciousness. Out of the narrow place where the foes pressed in — into the broad land where the soul can breathe. Jowett's word from yesterday — the spaciousness of the prospects. The God who rescues does not rescue into another prison. He rescues into a spacious place.

And then the reason — the reason behind the rescue, behind the reaching down, behind the drawing out, behind the spacious place: He rescued me because He delighted in me. Not because David deserved it. Not because David earned it. Not because David's faith was strong enough. Because God delighted in him. The rescue was the expression of delight. The reaching down was the hand of a Father who delights in His child. The spacious place was the gift of a God who takes pleasure in the one He rescued. 🙏

"He heard my voice — out of all the noises of the world, He heard my voice."

✦ Psalm 18:25–26 · You Show Yourself

To the faithful You show Yourself faithful;

to the blameless You show Yourself blameless;

to the pure You show Yourself pure.

✦ You Show Yourself

David discovers the mirror: God shows Himself according to what the soul is ready to see. To the faithful — He shows faithfulness. To the blameless — He shows blamelessness. To the pure — He shows purity. Not because God changes — He is immutable, always the same. But because the soul's capacity to see Him depends on the soul's own condition.

The faithful soul sees His faithfulness — because faithfulness recognizes faithfulness. The pure heart sees His purity — because purity can receive purity. What you bring to God determines what you see of God. Not because He withholds from the unfaithful. But because the eyes must be prepared for the sight. Owen said: the soul must be seasoned before it can receive glory. David says: the soul must be faithful before it can see faithfulness. 🙏

"You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light."
Psalm 18:28 · NKJV

✦ My Lamp Burning

You keep my lamp burning. Not I keep my lamp burning. You. The lamp that stays lit — the lamp on the lampstand, the lamp that this journal has been from the beginning — is kept burning by God. The oil is His. The flame is His. The keeping is His. The soul does not sustain her own fire. He sustains it.

My God turns my darkness into light. The darkness is real — David does not deny it. The darkness comes. The valley comes. The day of disaster comes. And God turns it. Not removes it instantly. Not pretends it was never there. Turns it — transforms it, converts it, takes what was darkness and makes it light. The very thing that was the enemy becomes the evidence of the rescue. 🙏

✦ Psalm 18:30–33 · His Way Is Perfect

As for God, His way is perfect; the Lord's word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.

For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?

It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He causes me to stand on the heights.

✦ Feet Like a Deer on the Heights

His way is perfect. Not almost perfect. Not mostly right. Perfect. The way that includes the deep waters, the powerful enemies, the day of disaster, the manifold trials — perfect. Not because the way is easy. Because the One who chose the way is flawless.

He makes my feet like the feet of a deer. The hinds' feet — the sure-footed mountain deer that can stand on the narrowest ledge, that can climb where no other creature dares, that can find footing on the steepest slope. Hannah Hurnard named her pilgrim after this very verse — Hinds' Feet on High Places. Much-Afraid, who started with malformed feet in the Valley of Humiliation — given hinds' feet by the Shepherd and caused to stand on the heights.

He causes me to stand on the heights. Not I cause myself. He causes. The standing is His doing. The heights are His destination. The feet are His gift. The soul that was drawn out of deep waters is placed on the heights — and given the feet to stand there. 🙏

✦ Psalm 18:35–36 · A Broad Path

You make Your saving help my shield, and Your right hand sustains me; Your help has made me great.

You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.

✦ Your Right Hand Sustains Me

Tozer said: all the time we are pursuing Him, we are already in His hand — Your right hand upholds me. David said it first: Your right hand sustains me. The same right hand. The same upholding. The same God who was always previous — reaching down, taking hold, drawing out, sustaining, shielding, making great.

You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. The broad path — Jowett's spacious place. Not the narrow, precarious ledge where one misstep means a fall. A broad path. Room to walk. Room to breathe. Room for the ankles to hold steady. The God who gives hinds' feet also provides the broad path — the sure footing and the safe ground together. 🙏

"The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior!"
Psalm 18:46 · NKJV

✦ The Lord Lives!

David closes with a shout — three exclamations that ring across three thousand years. The Lord lives! He is not dead. He is not absent. He is not a concept or a memory or a doctrine from the past. He lives. The Living God. The Living Bread. The Living Water. The Living Hope. He lives — today, this morning, in Caldas da Rainha, as surely as He lived when David wrote this psalm.

Praise be to my Rock! The rock that was the fortress, the refuge, the foundation, the stronghold — praised. Not analyzed. Not studied. Not explained. Praised. Because the heart that has been rescued cannot help itself — the doxology leaps to the lips.

Exalted be God my Savior! Exalted — lifted up — placed on the heights where He belongs. The One who reached down is lifted up. The One who stooped to rescue is exalted in praise. And the psalm that began with I love You ends with Exalted be God. Love at the beginning. Praise at the end. And between them — the whole story of the rescue. 🙏

"He rescued me because He delighted in me."
