We are facing some decisions that may change the direction of our lives. My Scripture reading helped my thinking.

I must trust the Holy Spirit for the right decision. 🙏

✦ ✦ ✦
"Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
Romans 8:5–6 · NIV

✦ Two Minds — Two Outcomes

Paul draws the line that every decision must cross. Two minds. Two directions. Two destinations. The mind governed by the flesh — and the mind governed by the Spirit. There is no third option. No neutral ground. No decision that belongs to neither category.

The mind governed by the flesh is set on what the flesh desires — safety, comfort, control, the calculation that leaves God out of the equation. And the outcome is death. Not physical death — spiritual death. The slow dying of a soul that makes its decisions without the Spirit.

The mind governed by the Spirit is set on what the Spirit desires — the will of God, the direction of God, the timing of God, even when the direction is unclear and the timing is uncomfortable. And the outcome is life and peace. Not just life. Peace. The peace is the confirmation. The peace is the compass. When the Spirit governs the decision, the path may be difficult — but the peace will be there. And when the flesh governs, the path may look safe — but the peace will be absent. 🙏

✦ Romans 8:7–8

The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

✦ Cannot — Not Will Not

Paul says something devastating about the flesh: it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Not will not. Cannot. The mind governed by the flesh is not merely unwilling to follow God. It is unable. The flesh cannot submit — the way a stone cannot fly. It is not a matter of trying harder. It is a matter of nature. The flesh is hostile to God by nature — and no amount of determination can make the hostile into the submitted.

This is why the decision Le faces cannot be made by flesh alone. The best human calculation — the most careful analysis, the most thorough weighing of options — if it is done without the Spirit, it cannot please God. Not because the logic is wrong. Because the source is wrong. The flesh cannot produce what only the Spirit can give. 🙏

✦ ✦ ✦
"You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you."
Romans 8:9 · NIV
✦ Romans 8:9–11 · The Spirit That Raised Jesus

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.

✦ The Same Power

Paul names the power that is available for the decision: the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead. Not a lesser spirit. Not a diminished version. Not a weaker copy for everyday use. The same Spirit. The power that took a dead body from a tomb and raised it to life — that power lives in you.

The decision ahead may feel like death — the death of a plan, the death of a comfort, the death of a direction that seemed settled. And Paul says: the Spirit that raises the dead is the Spirit who lives in you. If He can raise a body from a tomb, He can raise a life from uncertainty. If He can bring life out of death, He can bring direction out of confusion. The same power. The same Spirit. Living in you.

The body is mortal. The circumstances are uncertain. The decisions are real. But the Spirit is the one who raised Jesus. And that Spirit — living, active, present right now in Caldas da Rainha — is more than sufficient for whatever the decision requires. 🙏

"If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies."

Romans 8:11 · The same power — living in you
✦ ✦ ✦
"Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation — but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live."
Romans 8:12–13 · NIV

✦ The Obligation Is Clear

Paul settles it. We have an obligation — but it is not to the flesh. The obligation is clear. The soul does not owe the flesh anything. Not obedience. Not loyalty. Not the final word in any decision. The flesh has been fired. It no longer holds the contract. The obligation has been transferred — from the flesh to the Spirit.

If you live according to the flesh, you will die. The warning is plain. The decision made by flesh alone — by fear, by control, by human calculation without the Spirit — leads to death. Not punishment from an angry God. The natural consequence of living by a source that cannot produce life.

But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. The life comes from the Spirit. The dying is done by the Spirit. The flesh is put to death — not by human willpower but by the Spirit. And the result is life. Real life. The life that Jowett called living and life-creating. The life that Tozer said comes alive the moment we reckon upon its reality. Life and peace. 🙏

✦ The Compass for the Decision

The decisions ahead may change the direction of a life. The flesh says: calculate, control, protect. The Spirit says: trust Me. The flesh says: this is too risky, too uncertain, too terrifying. The Spirit says: I raised Jesus from the dead — do you think your decision is too hard for Me?

The compass is not the pros and cons list. The compass is not the fear. The compass is not the opinion of the world. The compass is peace. The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Where the peace is — the Spirit is governing. Where the peace is absent — the flesh is still in charge. And the obligation is clear: the flesh has no claim. The Spirit does.

Hannah Whitall Smith said: convictions are permanent. The conviction from this morning's reading: I must trust the Holy Spirit for the right decision. Not the flesh. Not the fear. Not the calculation alone. The Spirit. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. He is sufficient for whatever comes next. 🙏

"I must trust the Holy Spirit for the right decision."

The Compass Is Peace

The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Where the peace is, the Spirit is governing. Where the peace is absent, the flesh is in charge. Peace is the compass for every decision.

The Same Power

The Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. If He can raise a body from a tomb, He can raise a life from uncertainty. The same Spirit. The same power. Living in you now.

The Obligation Is Clear

We have an obligation — but not to the flesh. The flesh has been fired. The contract is transferred. The Spirit holds the obligation now. Trust Him for the right decision.

Life, Not Death

If by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. The dying is done by the Spirit. The result is life. Real life. Living, life-creating, peace-giving life.
