I was telling my husband, it will be a challenge to change to another country again — we don't have a family to help us.
This morning I heard the still small voice of Jesus, so clearly — impossible to describe — and He said:
"You are My family."
It was all I needed to hear. 🙏
✦ You Are My Family
The fear was real. A new country. No family waiting. No support structure in place. The challenge of starting again — of being uprooted again, transplanted again, arriving again in a place where no one is standing at the door. The flesh calculates: we have no family there. Who will help us?
And the still small voice — the voice of 1 Kings 19:12, the voice that came to Elijah not in the wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire, but in the gentle whisper — spoke. Clearly. Unmistakably. Impossible to describe, but impossible to doubt.
You are My family.
Four words. And the fear was answered. Not by a plan. Not by a strategy. Not by a list of contacts in the new country. By a relationship. The God who said I will never leave you nor forsake you — Hebrews 13:5 — said it again this morning, in the language the heart needed most: you are not going without family. You are going with Me. And I am your family. 🙏
"You are My family."

Paul names the moment that every pilgrim knows — the moment when the prayer cannot be formed. We do not know what we ought to pray for. The decision is too large. The future is too uncertain. The words are too small for the weight they need to carry. And in that moment — the Spirit intercedes.
Not with eloquence. Not with theology. With wordless groans. The Spirit's prayer is deeper than language. It reaches places that words cannot reach. It carries burdens that sentences cannot hold. And the God who searches hearts — who sees the unspoken fear, the unnamed hope, the prayer that cannot find its own voice — He knows the mind of the Spirit. He understands the groan. He receives the wordless prayer. And He answers it — in accordance with His will.
This morning, Le did not know what to pray. The challenge was too real. The fear was too specific. The words were not enough. And the Spirit interceded. And the answer came — not in a plan, not in a strategy — in four words from the still small voice: you are My family. The Spirit groaned. The Father heard. And the Son spoke. 🙏
✦ All Things — For Good
Romans 8:28. The golden thread of this journal — running from the first entry to the seventy-ninth. In all things God works for the good. Not in some things. Not in the easy things. Not in the things that make sense. All things.
The uprooting from Dallas to Portugal — all things. The uprootings that terrified — all things. The terrifying liberties that Bowen named — all things. The new country that has no family waiting — all things. Working together. For good. For those who love Him. For those who have been called according to His purpose.
The calling is not random. The purpose is not improvised. The move — if it comes — is not a disruption of the plan. It is the plan. The same God who called at midnight in Lubbock is the God who calls to a new country now. And the calling has a purpose. And the purpose works for good. Always. In all things. Without exception. 🙏
For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified.
✦ The Chain That Cannot Break
Paul builds a chain — and every link holds. Foreknown. Predestined. Called. Justified. Glorified. Five links. Five acts of God. And not a single one depends on the creature's effort. God foreknew — before the foundation of the world. God predestined — to be conformed to the image of His Son. God called — at midnight, in a hospital, through a Catholic priest. God justified — the 500 denari forgiven, the scarlet made white. God glorified — already spoken in the past tense, as though it has already happened. Because in God's mind, it has.
The chain runs from eternity past to eternity future — and not a single link can be broken. The one who was foreknown will be glorified. The one who was called will arrive. The one who was justified will be completed. The chain holds. Through every uprooting. Through every new country. Through every decision that changes the direction of a life. The chain does not break. 🙏
✦ If God Is for Us
Paul asks the question that silences every fear. What shall we say in response to these things? After the Spirit who intercedes. After the all things working for good. After the chain that cannot break. After the foreknowing and the calling and the justifying and the glorifying. What is left to say?
If God is for us, who can be against us? The question is rhetorical — because the answer is: no one. No new country. No absence of family. No challenge of starting over. No fear that the flesh can manufacture. If God is for us — and He is — then who can stand against us?
The still small voice this morning said: you are My family. Paul says: if the God of the universe has claimed you as family, who in the universe can unclaim you? 🙏
✦ Nothing Can Separate
Paul reaches the crescendo — the highest point of the highest chapter in the New Testament. And he builds a list of every conceivable threat — and declares them all defeated.
Death — cannot separate. Life — with all its complications, its uprootings, its decisions — cannot separate. Angels — cannot separate. Demons — cannot separate. The present — with its fears, its uncertainties, its challenges — cannot separate. The future — with its unknowns, its new countries, its roads not yet walked — cannot separate. Powers — cannot separate. Height — cannot separate. Depth — cannot separate. Anything else in all creation — the catch-all, the final sweep, the declaration that covers everything Paul might have missed — cannot separate.
More than conquerors. Not barely surviving. Not scraping through. More than conquerors. Not by their own strength — through Him who loved us. The victory is His. The love is His. The conquering is through Him. And the love from which nothing can separate — is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The still small voice said: you are My family. Paul says: and nothing in all creation can take you out of the family. Not a new country. Not the absence of earthly support. Not the challenge of starting again. Not the fear. Not the flesh. Not the future. Nothing. 🙏
"Neither death nor life, nor the present nor the future, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Wordless Groans
We do not know what to pray for. But the Spirit intercedes with groans deeper than language. The Father hears. The Son speaks. The prayer that has no words receives the answer that has all the words it needs.
