Psalm 1 — The Tree Planted by Streams of Water

Saturday, June 13, 2026 · Evening
📍 Dax, France
"Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night."
Psalm 1:1–2 · NKJV
✦ Psalm 1 · The Gateway to the Psalter

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night.

✦ Day and Night

The very first psalm. The gateway to all 150. And the first word: Blessed. Not instructed. Not commanded. Not warned. Blessed. David begins the entire Psalter with a portrait of happiness — and the happy person is the one who meditates on the law of the Lord day and night.

Day — the morning, when the pilgrim opens the Word and listens. Night — the evening, when the day's reading is turned into a journal entry and the heart is cleared for sleep. Day and night. The rhythm of the whole devotional life — described in the first two verses of the first psalm. 🙏

✦ Psalm 1:3 · The Tree

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers.

✦ Planted — Not Wandering

The tree is planted. Not wandering. Not uprooted. Not blown by the wind. Planted by streams of water — the source that never runs dry. And the fruit comes in season — not on demand, not on the pilgrim's timeline, but in God's season. The leaf does not wither. Whatever they do prospers.

The motorhome moves across France. The addresses change. The countries change. But the tree is planted — not in a place but in a practice. The streams of water are the Word. The roots go down into the morning. And the leaf does not wither — because the source is not the location. The source is Him. 🙏

✦ Psalm 1:4–6 · The Two Ways

Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

✦ The Lord Watches Over the Way

David closes with the simplest contrast in Scripture: two ways. The tree and the chaff. The planted and the blown. The watched-over and the lost. The Lord watches over the way of the righteous. Not just the destination. The way. The road. The daily walk. The morning devotion. The evening journal. The rough path through France with the apartment sold and the doors not yet open.

He watches over the way. The whole way. Every step. Every entry. Every morning. Every evening. From Caldas da Rainha to Dax. From Nahum 1:12 to Psalm 1. The Lord watches. 🙏

"That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither."
