How lowly was Jesus! He "did not break the bruised reed." He imparts to His little ones no tyrannic power. They use no violence in dealing with souls, but say with John, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world."
Our Lord "rejoiced in spirit" in an unusual manner, when He said, "I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and revealed them unto babes."
How happy are we in the presence of a little child — how much at ease! It imposes on us no burden of restraint, of fear, of management! It is in this childlike disposition of meekness, of sweetness, of innocency, that we should seek to benefit others.
✦ No Burden of Restraint
A child does not manage you. A child does not calculate the effect of their words. A child does not strategize about how to influence you. A child simply is — present, open, without agenda — and in that simplicity, everyone around them relaxes. The burden lifts. The fear dissolves. The management stops.
Jesus rejoiced when the Father hid things from the wise and revealed them to babes. Not because wisdom is bad — but because the wise so often use their wisdom as a tool of power. The babe has no power. The babe simply receives — and what is received through the open hands of a child arrives pure, without the contamination of management or strategy.
He did not break the bruised reed. Isaiah 42:3. A bruised reed — already bent, already damaged, barely holding — and He does not break it. He does not straighten it by force. He tends it. The way a child would tend a wounded bird — with gentle hands and no agenda beyond kindness. 🙏
It imposes on us no burden of restraint, of fear, of management! We have to pace our work as God directs us, or we can exhaust and discourage ourselves. 🙏
The temptation of the devoted soul is always to do more, to push harder, to manage the spiritual work as if it depended on our effort. And Guyon says: that is the tyrannic power that Jesus never used. The child does not exhaust itself managing outcomes. The child rests in the Father's timing — and the work gets done without the burden. Pace the work as God directs. Not faster. Not harder. As He directs. The gentle zephyr, not the whirlwind. 🙏
We notice an illustration of this in the woman who touched our Lord, when He said: "I perceive that virtue is gone out of me." In a similar manner, without words, one heart may communicate grace to another heart, as God imparts grace to the soul.
But if the soul is not in a state to receive it, the grace of the interior is not communicated, as is expressed in another passage: "If they are not children of peace, your peace will return to you again."
This illustrates pure interior communications of the grace of God, from heart to heart, which the soul relishes in silence, and which silence is often more efficacious than a multitude of words.
✦ Virtue Gone Out — Grace Received in Silence
The woman who touched Jesus's garment did not speak. She reached. And virtue went out of Him — without a sermon, without a conversation, without a theological explanation. The grace traveled from His heart to hers through touch and silence. He felt it leave. She felt it arrive. And neither of them needed words to know what had happened.
If they are not children of peace, your peace will return to you again. Luke 10:6. The grace requires a receiver. The heart must be open — a child of peace — or the silent communication has nowhere to land. This is Guyon's vacuum once more: the air rushes to the empty space. The grace flows to the open heart. But if the heart is closed, the grace returns to the giver — not lost, but unreceived. 🙏
The communication of the grace of God, from heart to heart, which the soul relishes in silence, and which silence is often more efficacious than a multitude of words. 🙏
✦ The Final Lesson — From Caldas
Nineteen days with Guyon. And the last teaching arrives in the place where the journal began — Caldas da Rainha. The apartment being packed. The years of morning devotions in these rooms, being folded into boxes. And Guyon says: the deepest communication happens in silence.
The years of quiet mornings in this apartment — before dawn, before words, before the journal, before any of this was written — those were the silent operations of grace. Heart to heart. God to soul. No audience. No journal entry. No pastoral notes. Just silence, and the grace that flows through it. That is what is being packed today. Not furniture. Not possessions. The silent grace of years — carried forward into France, into whatever rooms come next. The grace does not stay in the apartment. It travels with the heart that received it. 🙏
"Silence is often more efficacious than a multitude of words."
Madame Guyon · From Caldas da Rainha · Where the journal began · Where silence did its workThe Childlike Disposition
No burden of restraint, of fear, of management. The child simply is — present, open, without agenda. Pace the work as God directs. The child does not exhaust itself managing outcomes.
Heart to Heart
The woman touched and virtue went out. No words needed. One heart communicates grace to another in silence. The grace requires a receiver — a child of peace. If the heart is closed, the peace returns.
The Grace Travels
Caldas da Rainha — where the journal began, where years of morning devotions happened in silence. The apartment is being packed. The grace does not stay in the rooms. It travels with the heart that received it.
Guyon's nineteenth day. Written from Caldas da Rainha — the city where the journal began, where Le is now packing to move to France. The location holds everything.
The first entry — A Boca do Justo é Fonte de Vida: Written here, in this city, in March. The mouth as overflow of an interior formed in intimidade. And today Guyon teaches the same truth from the opposite direction: sometimes the overflow is not words at all. It is silence. The grace that communicates heart to heart without a single word spoken. The fountain still flows — but today it flows in silence.
Day sixteen — Quenching the Spirit: "As soon as the spirit in me was silent, I had nothing to say." The courage to be empty. And today: silence is more efficacious than a multitude of words. The Spirit who fell silent taught more by His withdrawal than by His speaking. The grace that works in silence works more deeply than the grace that works in words.
Day four — Divine Communications: "As the air rushes to a vacuum, so God fills the soul emptied of self." And today: the grace flows to the open heart, heart to heart, in silence. The vacuum receives. The child of peace receives. The closed heart sends the grace back — not lost, but unreceived.
Caldas da Rainha — the circle closes: The journal began here. The first entry was written in this city. And now, nineteen days into Guyon's letters, the last lesson arrives in the same place: the deepest work happens in silence. The years of morning devotions in this apartment — before dawn, before words — were the silent operations of grace. And now the apartment is being packed, and the grace travels with the pilgrim into the next chapter. France is next. The rooms will change. The silence will not. 🙏
