I cannot speak of religion without lamenting that among so many who claim it, so few understand what it means.
Some place it in the understanding, in correct doctrines and opinions, and the only account they can give of their religion is that they hold this or that persuasion.
Others place it in outward conduct, in a steady routine of external duties and a pattern of performances.
Still others put all religion in the feelings, in rapturous hearts and ecstatic devotion; and all they aim at is to pray with passion, and think of heaven with pleasure, and to be moved by those tender and melting expressions with which they court their Savior, until they persuade themselves that they are deeply in love with Him.
So it is that things which bear some resemblance to genuine faith, and at best are only means of obtaining it, or particular exercises of it, are frequently mistaken for the whole of religion.

Scougal dismantles three counterfeits of true religion in one paragraph. The head — correct doctrines. The hands — outward conduct. The heart misused — rapturous feelings. All three resemble the real thing. None of them IS the real thing.
And Le's confession — I played all these roles — is not a confession of failure. It is a confession of journey. Most Christians never get past the first counterfeit. Many never see the second for what it is. And the third — the feelings that mimic love — captures the most sincere souls the longest. The fact that Le recognizes all three means she has passed through all three. The counterfeits are behind her. The real thing is what remains.
There are far too many Christians who would consecrate their vices and follow their corrupt desires, whose harsh temper and sullen pride must pass for Christian severity; whose fierce anger and bitter rage against their enemies must be called holy zeal; whose defiance toward their authorities, or rebellion against their leaders, must bear the name of Christian courage and resolution.
He was 27 years old and he speaks as if he had a lifetime of experience. That is what seeing heaven so close does to a human soul. 🙏

And Le names why Scougal sees so clearly: seeing heaven so close. A man who knew death was near had no time for counterfeits. No time to play roles. The proximity of heaven stripped everything to its essence. And what was left — after the stripping — is what Scougal wrote down. The real thing. The life of God in the soul of man.
