Forsaking Sin and Keeping Watch — Be a Doer of the Word

"But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it — not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it — they will be blessed in what they do."
James 1:25 · NKJV
✦ Henry Scougal · The Life of God in the Soul of Man · Forsaking Sin

If we desire to have our souls shaped into this holy pattern — to become partakers of the divine nature, and have Christ formed in our hearts — we must seriously resolve to avoid and abandon all wicked and sinful practices.

There can be no treaty of peace while we are still carrying the weapons of rebellion; nor can we expect to have our diseases cured if we are daily feeding on poison.

✦ No Treaty While Carrying Weapons

Scougal turns practical. After the vision, the despair, the rescue by the everlasting arms — now: what do we do? Stop feeding on poison. Stop carrying the weapons of rebellion. The soul cannot be healed while it is actively swallowing what makes it sick.

This is not salvation by effort — Scougal already proved that is impossible. This is cooperation with the Physician. God does the healing. The soul stops drinking the poison. Both are necessary. 🙏

✦ Scougal · The Outward Life Is Within Our Power

In this we cannot excuse ourselves by claiming impossibility; for surely our outward man is in some measure within our power. We have some command of our feet, our hands, and our tongue — and even of our thoughts.

And we find this power greatly strengthened and advanced, if we are careful to exercise it.

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The soul cannot produce the divine life by effort. But the outward life IS within our power. The outward cleansing is the cooperation with the inward work. God does the transforming. The soul does the yielding — including the practical decision to stop the behavior that contradicts the life. And the power to govern is strengthened by exercise. The muscle of refusal grows by use.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ Scougal · Do Not Measure by the World

We must not take our measure from the standards of the world. Most people hardly count anything as serious as what they call being "too strict."

It is the greatest folly to measure our actions by any rule other than the one by which we will be judged.

✦ Scougal · The Word Is the Standard

If we would ever cleanse our way, it must be "by taking heed to it according to the word of God" (Psalm 119:9).

That "word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit" (Hebrews 4:12), and will certainly reveal many things to be sinful which pass for quite innocent in the eyes of the world.

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

Do not measure by the world's standard. The world calls strictness a fault and lets everything else pass. The Word cuts deeper than the world's comfortable categories. Hebrews 4:12 — the sword that divides soul and spirit, thoughts and intents. The Word reveals what the world excuses. The standard is the Sermon on the Mount. The standard is the Word — the Rock we stand on.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ Scougal · No Sin Is Trivial

Let us follow the Psalmist: "By the word of Your lips, I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer" (Psalm 17:4).

Let us never regard any sin as light and trivial, but be fully persuaded that the smallest sin is infinitely grievous in the sight of God and harmful to the souls of men.

✦ From Le's Heart · Caldas da Rainha · June 28, 2026

You have to study the Bible to show yourself approved — not approved by the world but by God. The Word of God is our guide, the Rock we stand on.

Be a doer of the Word. 🙏

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
James 1:22 · NKJV
✦ James 1:22–25 · The Mirror That Transforms by Doing

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it — not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it — they will be blessed in what they do.

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

Le brings James to complete Scougal. Two mirrors in two nights. Last night: 2 Corinthians 3:18 — the mirror that transforms by beholding. Tonight: James 1:25 — the mirror that transforms by doing. Both require continuing. The one who walks away — forgets. The one who continues — is transformed.

Scougal says: study the holy laws. Le says: be a doer of the Word. The divine life is inward, free, self-moving — and it expresses itself in action. Not action that produces the life. Action that proves the life is real.

"Be a doer of the Word."

Stop the Poison

No treaty while carrying weapons. No cure while feeding on poison. The soul cooperates with the Physician. God heals. The soul yields.

⚔️

The Two-Edged Sword

The Word is living and powerful. It reveals what the world excuses. The standard is the Word — the Rock we stand on.

Two Mirrors

2 Corinthians 3:18 — transforms by beholding. James 1:25 — transforms by doing. Both require continuing. Both require not walking away.

🏃

Be a Doer

Do not merely listen. Do what it says. Look intently. Continue in it. Not forgetting — doing. Blessed in what they do.

"But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it — not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it — they will be blessed in what they do."
