The Constantly Burning Fire — Cost What It May

Friday, July 10, 2026 · Evening
📍 Caldas da Rainha, Portugal
"Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you."
1 Peter 4:12 · NKJV
✦ François Fénelon · The Constantly Burning Fire

We still carry within us a constantly burning fire, like a lamp before the throne of God.

"I sleep but my heart waketh" (Song of Solomon 5:2).

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

Scougal's fire returns in Fénelon: the lamp before the throne. "I sleep but my heart waketh." The prayer beneath the prayer. Two voices across the Channel. One fire.

✦ Fénelon · Cherish It and Guard It

We must continually cherish the spirit of prayer, and avoid everything that tends to make us lose it.

We should decline occupations which dissipate the mind, pleasures which excite the passions, and everything calculated to awaken old inclinations that have caused us so much trouble.

✦ From Le's Heart · Caldas da Rainha · July 10, 2026

We should greatly fear and be exceedingly cautious to avoid all things that tend to make us lose this state of prayer. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

Fear to lose the fire. Not slavish fear — protective fear. The spirit of prayer is fragile not because God is weak but because the world is loud. Scougal's vanities in through the back entrance. The fire must be guarded.

✦ Fénelon · Cost What It May

The first effect of sincere love is an earnest desire to know all that we ought to do.

Any other desire is proof we love ourselves under a pretense of loving God.

Cost what it may, we must both know and do without reservation what He requires of us.

✦ From Le's Heart

Cost what it may.

1 Peter 4:12 — "Do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal." 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The cost is real. The fiery ordeal is real. Peter says: don't be surprised. The apartment. The extortion. The move. Not strange. Not punishment. The curriculum. And the reservation is the proof of the counterfeit. The cost is the proof of the love.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ Fénelon · Truths Like Dye into Wool

Choose readings which instruct in duty and faults; not barren productions which sentimentalize the heart.

We should be colored and penetrated by truths as wool is by the dye.

They should be our only guide, as the rays of the sun are our only light.

✦ Fénelon · The Vestibule and the Temple

When truths are incorporated in us, then our praying becomes real. Up to that point it was but the shadow; we thought we had penetrated the gospel when we had barely set foot upon the vestibule.

All our feelings, resolutions, views — the rough mass from which God would hew His likeness.

When His celestial rays shine within, we see in the true light — as we admit the splendor of the sun the moment we behold his rising beams.

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

Everything we thought was the temple — was the vestibule. Our clearest views — the raw material from which God hews His likeness. And when the celestial rays shine — we see without argument. The journal is in the vestibule. And that is exactly where it should be — because the God who hews His likeness is working on the raw material right now.

✦ From Le's Heart

Everything Fénelon writes speaks to me. 🙏

"Cost what it may, we must both know and do without reservation what He requires of us."

The Burning Fire

I sleep but my heart waketh. A lamp before the throne. Scougal's fire. Fénelon's fire. One flame.

🛡️

Cherish and Guard

Greatly fear to lose the state of prayer. Cherish what nourishes. Avoid what extinguishes. The fire must be protected.

⚔️

Cost What It May

The fiery ordeal is not strange — it is the curriculum. The cost is the proof of the love.

🏛️

The Vestibule

Everything we thought was the temple was the vestibule. Our clearest views — the raw mass. When celestial rays shine, we see without argument.

"Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you."
