On Wandering Thoughts — In Returning and Rest You Shall Be Saved

Tuesday, July 21, 2026 · Evening
📍 Caldas da Rainha, Portugal
"In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength."
Isaiah 30:15 · NKJV
✦ François Fénelon · Christian Counsel · On Wandering Thoughts

The true method of conquering wandering thoughts, is never to attack them directly with bitterness, and never to be discouraged by their frequency or duration.

It is better to return gently to God, presenting to Him the distraction itself as a proof of our infirmity.

✦ From Le's Heart · Caldas da Rainha · July 21, 2026

The true method of conquering wandering thoughts is never to attack them directly with bitterness, and never to be discouraged by their frequency or duration. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

Le asked for the Scripture foundation — and three verses hold Fénelon's teaching:

Isaiah 30:15In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength. The method is returning — not fighting. Quietness — not bitterness. This is the verse Fénelon is standing on.

Psalm 103:13-14As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. The patience Fénelon counsels toward ourselves is the patience God already has toward us.

James 1:5God gives to all liberally and without reproach. The bitter self-attack is doing what God refuses to do — condemning the dust for being dust.

✦ Fénelon · The Gentle Return

We must deal gently with our souls. Recall them quietly and tranquilly; if we do otherwise, we shall be disturbed without being corrected.

Those who are too violent in their resistance, often do more harm by their anxiety than by the distraction itself.

When the imagination is lively, the will gains everything by persuasion and patience.

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The violent resistance does more harm than the distraction. The soul that fights the wandering with bitterness produces anxiety — and the anxiety becomes a bigger distraction than the original thought. The remedy is gentleness: recall quietly, tranquilly. Not main force. Persuasion and patience. Scougal said: govern, not destroy. Fénelon says: persuade, not force.

✦ Fénelon · The Proof of Our Infirmity

Our distractions may be turned to good account, by offering them to God as a proof of our infirmity.

Our weakness, felt and acknowledged, is more pleasing to Him than strength of which we are proud.

The wandering thought that humbles us is better than the perfect meditation that puffs us up.

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The distraction that humbles us is better than the perfect meditation that puffs us up. The weakness felt and acknowledged — more pleasing to God than proud strength. The wandering itself becomes an offering. Weakness as qualification. The return itself is the prayer. The distraction is not the failure. The refusal to return would be.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ Fénelon · The Present Moment

One of the greatest safeguards against distraction is faithfulness to the present moment.

If we are doing God's will in the duty at hand, our wandering thoughts during prayer are but the weakness of a soul that truly desires to pray, and God looks with compassion upon that desire.

He who does what he can, does what he ought.

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

He who does what he can, does what he ought. The packing pilgrim who brings the evening devotional after a day of boxes — is doing what she can. The soul that desires to pray but finds the mind wandering — is doing what she can. And God looks with compassion — not with reproach. The return is the prayer. The desire is the offering. And the God who knows our frame — receives both with compassion. 🙏

"The true method of conquering wandering thoughts is never to attack them directly with bitterness, and never to be discouraged by their frequency or duration."
