The angels know what the joys of heaven are, and therefore they rejoice over one sinner who repents. If an angel could speak to us of heaven, he would smile and say, "All these fine things are but a child's picture book. You are little children, and you cannot understand the greatness of eternal joy."
We may talk, and think, and guess, and dream, but we can never measure the infinite heaven which God has prepared for His children.
✦ A Child's Picture Book
Pearly gates. Golden streets. White robes. Harps. Crowns. Spurgeon says: a child's picture book. The real heaven is beyond what mortal eyes have seen, ears have heard, or hearts have imagined. 1 Corinthians 2:9. And the angels — who know the real thing — rejoice not over the architecture but over the sinner who just became heir to it. 🙏
How careful God is of His people! How concerned He is for them — not only for their survival but for their comfort.
He would have us not only His living people, and His protected people, but His happy people too.
He will not only give them bread, but honey too. He will not simply give them milk, but wine and milk as well. "Comfort, yes, comfort My people!" — it is the Father's yearning heart, attentive even to the small things in the lives of His children.
"Comfort" that one with a tearful eye. "Comfort" that child of mine with an aching heart. "Comfort" that poor grieving one. "Comfort, yes, comfort My people, says your God."
✦ Not Only Bread — But Honey
Comfort, yes, comfort My people. Said twice. Isaiah 40:1. The repetition is the emphasis — the Father's yearning heart, not content to say it once.
God cares not only about survival but about happiness. Not only bread but honey. Not only milk but wine and milk. He is not a bare-necessities God. He is the God who scattered stars for pleasure and put flowers in hedgerows because He wanted to. The same God who said comfort — and then said it again.
"Comfort" that one with a tearful eye. The Father naming His children individually. Seeing the specific tear. Knowing the specific ache. Attentive to the small things. Not the God of broad policies — the God who notices the particular eye, the particular heart, the particular grief. 🙏
The Comfort of God has never failed me. I can always count on it — receive it without even asking for it — and it is always there for me.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. 🙏
✦ Without Even Asking
Receive it without even asking. The comfort arrives before the request — the way Hagar's fountain was already near before she saw it. The way the unlisted apartment sold before it was listed. The way the mornings before dawn fill the reservoir before the day's need begins. The comfort is prepositioned. God does not wait for Le to ask. He sees the tearful eye, the aching heart — and the comfort is already there.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5. The comfort that arrives without asking operates beyond understanding. It cannot be explained. It can only be received. 🙏

Spurgeon's sixteenth day. And today the Father's yearning heart speaks — twice — comfort, yes, comfort.
Spurgeon's day nine — the beautiful beyond necessary: "The flowers in the hedgerows, the stars in the sky — provided because God wanted to show how He loved us." And today: not only bread but honey, not only milk but wine and milk. The same God. The same excess of love. He gives beyond the necessary because His nature is generosity, not economy.
Guyon's day thirty — near your heart: "You will find the Lord at all times near your heart." And Le today: I receive it without even asking. The nearness and the prepositioned comfort are the same thing. He is so near that the comfort arrives before the prayer.
Le's testimony — the comfort that has never failed: I can always count on it. Always. Through the mornings before dawn. Through the testing season in Caldas. The comfort has never failed. Not once. And it arrives without asking — because the God who sees the tearful eye does not wait for the mouth to form the words.
Proverbs 3:5 — the posture of trust: Lean not on your own understanding. The comfort that arrives without asking cannot be understood. It can only be trusted. The heart is the right instrument for receiving what the mind cannot explain. And the heart that trusts with all its strength receives the comfort that has never failed, will never fail, and arrives before it is asked for. 🙏
