"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.'"
The Psalm opens with a dwelling and a declaration. The dwelling is the secret place. Not a location. A relationship. The soul that has made God its home — dwells. Not visits. Dwells. And the shadow of the Almighty is proximity. The shadow falls only on what is close. The closer the soul, the deeper the shadow. The deeper the shadow, the greater the protection.
And the declaration: I will say. Not feel. Not hope. Say. He is my refuge. He is my fortress. The pilgrim whose office is now a motorhome makes this declaration: He is my fortress. Not the apartment. Not the office. He.
"Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday."
Four dangers. Four times of day. The Psalm covers every hour — because the dwelling covers every hour. Not protection from trouble — protection in trouble. The feathers and wings — the mother bird covering her young. Not a fortress of stone. A fortress of presence.
And the shield is truth. His truth shall be your shield. The Word read every morning — becoming the armor worn every day. The mornings are the dwelling. The Psalm is the promise.
"Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place,
no evil shall befall you;
for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.
In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone."
The condition: because you dwell. And the promise: angels charged over you. The same hand that holds the stone in the air — sending angels to hold the pilgrim on the road.
The road to France — the Benimar rolling north from Caldas through Vilar de Pinheiro — is covered by this promise. Not some of your ways. All. The highway. The parking. The border. The unknown. All your ways.
"Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble.
With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation."
God Himself speaks. And the reason: because he has set his love upon Me. Not performance. Not perfection. Love. Fénelon's pure love. The love that resides in the will alone. The love that can't think of anything more worthwhile.
Seven "I will" promises. Not conditional on strength. Conditional on love. And the love was given by God in the first place — absolutely nothing came from me.
This is the Psalm for the pilgrims on the move. The apartment sold. The office in the motorhome. The road ahead unknown. But the secret place travels with the pilgrim — because the secret place is not a location. It is a dwelling in God. 🙏
