James opens not with theology but with the testing season. Count it all joy. Not some joy. All joy. Not after the trials — when you fall into them. The joy and the trial occupy the same moment.
Le brought these verses on July 16 alongside Spurgeon's Valley of Weeping: the wells filled to the brim with streams of love and joy. And Spurgeon's day ten: great faith must have great trials. James names the mechanism: the testing produces patience. The patience finishes its work. The finished work is maturity — perfect, complete, lacking nothing.

✦ Ask — Liberally and Without Reproach
The wisdom Le asked for on the morning the Spirit whispered test God — this is where it comes from. Ask of God, who gives liberally and without reproach. Not reluctantly. Not with conditions. Liberally — generously, abundantly. And without reproach — without shaming the one who asks.
But James adds the condition: ask in faith, with no doubting. The doubter is a wave — driven and tossed. Spurgeon's Peter on the water from day twelve: faith was his life preserver — unbelief sent him down. The wave did not change. The faith changed. The one who asks must ask believing — or the wave swallows the request.
Le's posture on that morning was exactly right: I must learn from the Holy Spirit in my heart. I must wait on the Lord for revelation knowledge. She asked. She waited. She did not doubt. The wisdom will come. 🙏

Blessed is the man who endures. Not the one who avoids. Not the one who escapes. The one who endures. The crown of life is promised not to the untested but to the approved — the soul that went through the fire and came out still loving God. Every good gift comes down from this unchanging Father. The mornings before dawn — a gift. The Word — a gift. The moment of God — a gift. The testing season that produces patience — a gift. ✦ Swift to Hear — Slow to Speak
Guyon's day twenty: silence means listening. Silence is often more efficacious than a multitude of words. And James: swift to hear, slow to speak. The same instruction. The ear before the mouth. The receiving before the giving. The listening before the responding.
The contentious spirit, the continual dripping — James addresses the same root: the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. The dripping, the nagging, the discontentment — none of it produces what God's righteousness produces. Only the listening produces. Only the patience produces. Only the quiet ear, turned toward God, produces the righteousness that contention never can. 🙏

The hearer who does not do is a man who looks in a mirror, walks away, and immediately forgets his own face. The Word is the mirror. The doing is the remembering. The one who only hears is the one who only looks — and the looking without doing produces nothing but self-deception.
Le's mornings are not only hearing. They are doing. The reading is the looking. The journal is the remembering. The living — the trusting, the daily putting on of the new human being — that is the doing. The Beloved Devotional Journal is the record of a doer, not merely a hearer. 🙏

✦ Pure Religion — Two Things
James reduces religion to two things: care for the vulnerable and personal holiness. Visit orphans and widows. Keep yourself unspotted. One faces outward — toward the broken world. The other faces inward — toward the holy God. Both are required. Neither alone is sufficient.
Guyon's day one: the religion of the heart. And James: pure religion is the heart expressed in action — visiting, caring, keeping. The religion that stays in the closet is incomplete. The religion that never enters the closet is impure. Both the closet and the orphan need the soul that has heard the Word and does it. 🙏

The testing season — James 1:2–4: Le brought these verses on July 16. They anchored the Valley of Weeping entry. Today they anchor the entire chapter. The testing is not the interruption of faith. It is the curriculum of faith. Patience produces completion.
Wisdom — James 1:5: Le asked for wisdom about testing God — and James says: ask of God, who gives liberally and without reproach. The Spirit whispered. Le asked. The wisdom is coming. The one who asks in faith — without doubting — will receive.
The mirror — James 1:22–25: The Beloved Devotional Journal is the record of a doer, not merely a hearer. Le reads the Word each morning — that is the looking in the mirror. She lives it each day — that is the doing. The journal preserves the moments so the face is not forgotten. The entries are the remembering.
Pure religion — James 1:27: Care for the vulnerable and personal holiness. Outward and inward. The closet and the orphan. Le's mornings are the closet. Le's life is the visiting. The religion of the heart — Guyon's first lesson — expressed in the doing of the Word.
Le could never be a doer of the Word without Him: James 1:17 — every good gift is from above. The doing is not Le's achievement. It is the Father's gift. The patience is a gift. The wisdom is a gift. The daily bread is a gift. The doer of the Word is the receiver of the Gift — and the Gift is the Father of lights, with whom there is no shadow of turning. 🙏
