The Lord said to Samuel, "I have provided Myself a king among his sons."
Samuel looked at Eliab — tall, impressive — and said, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before Him!"
But the Lord said, "Do not look at his appearance or stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
Even the prophet got it wrong. Samuel saw Eliab and saw a king. God said no. Not because Eliab lacked ability. Because God does not see as man sees. Man measures the outside. God measures the heart.
Scougal spent sixteen entries teaching this: the natural life imitates the divine. The outward appearance can look like godliness and be one of the three counterfeits. Man sees the counterfeit and calls it real. God looks at the heart and knows the difference.
Jesse made seven sons pass before Samuel. "The Lord has not chosen these."
Samuel asked, "Are all the young men here?"
Jesse said, "There remains yet the youngest — keeping the sheep."
Seven sons. Seven refusals. And the one God chose was not even in the room. In the field. Keeping sheep. Forgotten. The youngest. The smallest.
God's pattern: He chooses what man overlooks. 1 Corinthians 1:27 — the foolish to shame the wise, the weak to shame the mighty. The forgotten shepherd boy. The fishermen. The tax collector. The 500 denari soul who went to God at midnight with nothing.
Le has said it: absolutely nothing came from me. That is not false humility. That is the qualification. The heart empty of self is the heart God can fill. Seven impressive sons refused. The forgotten one — chosen.
And the Lord said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!"
The Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.
"This is the one!" Based on the heart. And the Spirit came upon David from that day forward — through Goliath, Saul's jealousy, the wilderness, the throne, the fall, the repentance. The Spirit came upon the heart God chose — and did not depart.
David's heart was not perfect — it would fail. But it would always return. Psalm 51. The broken heart. The repentance that proved the anointing was real. The Author and Finisher — sustaining the faith He Himself gave.
✦ What the Lord Sees
The whole journal is built on this verse. The Lord looks at the heart. Not the theology — the heart. Not the eloquence — the heart. Not the number of entries — the heart.
Fénelon: pure love is in the will alone. The heart. Scougal: an inward, free, self-moving principle. The heart. Consuelo: the wife who loves the husband for his riches does not love the husband. The heart.
And David — the forgotten shepherd boy — had the heart God was looking for. Not because David was worthy. Because David was available. Open. Honest. Como a terra árida, tenho sede de ti.
The Lord does not see as man sees. And that is the best news the 500 denari soul will ever hear. 🙏
