Before the Passover feast, Jesus, knowing His hour had come — having loved His own who were in the world — He loved them to the end.
He rose from supper, laid aside His garments, took a towel. He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet.
The commandment arrives after a towel. Before Jesus said "love one another," He knelt with a basin and washed their feet. The Teacher became the servant. The King of glory — on His knees, holding dirty feet.
He loved them to the end — to the end of His life, and to the uttermost extent. Both true. The love that kneels with a towel is the love that goes to the cross. The same posture. Downward. Toward the other. At cost to Himself.
This is the love the commandment requires: not a feeling. An action. Not an idea. A towel. The love that gets on its knees before it opens its mouth. He set the example for us to follow.
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another."
Love one another was not new — Leviticus 19:18 said it. What is new is the standard.
The old standard: as yourself. The new standard: as I have loved you. The standard changed from human to divine. Love as yourself means treat others the way you want to be treated — the Golden Rule. Love as I have loved you means treat others the way Christ treated you. He washed our feet. He bore our sin. He died in our place. He rose to give us life. The new commandment is not just higher. It is other.
"By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
The evidence of discipleship is not knowledge. Not theology. Not books read. It is love for one another. The world will know by one mark: the love between them.
Smith: only so much true godliness as there is love. James 3:17: the wisdom from above — full of mercy. 1 Samuel 16:7: the Lord looks at the heart. And Jesus: the world looks at the love.
The evidence is visible. The apartment left perfectly for the next tenant. The soft answer in the stress. The patience with the movers. The kindness to the cleaners. By this all will know.

We love because He first loved us. The love is not generated by us. It is received — and passed on. The source is always Him. The first move is always His.
Le said it: absolutely nothing came from me. The love came from God — shed abroad by the Holy Spirit, received in the midnight conversion, confirmed every morning, expressed every evening. The new commandment is possible because the new love was given first.
Seven days to August 20. The commandment for the final week: love one another. As He loved you. In the farewells. In the handing over of keys. In the looking forward. As I have loved you. 🙏
