D'Abondantes Joies Devant Ta Face — The Yoke Without Resistance

Le read this exact passage eight days ago, on the thirteenth of August. She has brought it back today, and everything about it has changed — because she has.

On the thirteenth, Bonhoeffer's question was still ahead of her. What decisions and painful separations will it entail? The apartment was not yet empty. The car was not yet sold. The separations were a thing to be braced for.

Today they are in the past tense. The keys are handed over, the car is gone, the Benimar has left Caldas da Rainha. The same sentence read twice: once as a warning, once as a report.

And note what Bonhoeffer promised would be on the far side of it. A path full of mercy beyond measure. Discipleship is joy.

On the thirteenth that was his claim, and this journal defended it by pointing at his death. Today it does not need defending. Le's own note is the evidence: I was blessed to sense the presence of the Lord all day.

✦ Pastor Barnabas · Pastoral Note — Without Resistance

Two words in Bonhoeffer's first sentence were passed over eight days ago and deserve their turn. Those who let Jesus' yoke rest on them without resistance.

Anyone who has worked animals knows what he means. A yoke that fits does not injure a beast that walks under it — it injures the one that fights it. The sores come from pulling against the wood, not from the wood. The same yoke, on two animals, produces rest in one and wounds in the other, and the difference is entirely on their side.

Which changes what the burden is light is claiming. Bonhoeffer is not saying the load is small. He is saying that most of the weight anyone actually feels is the weight of resisting.

Le said the same thing in July without the vocabulary. I was tired of my winning. And then she stopped fighting the yoke. Everything since — the giving away, the emptying, the leaving — has been done under it rather than against it.

Bonhoeffer will not oversell it either. He calls it the gentle pressure of this yoke — and pressure is still pressure. He does not write the absence of pressure. Something is resting on the shoulders, and it can be felt.

And look at what he says that pressure produces: the strength to walk the right path without becoming weary.

That is Isaiah's promise, and Isaiah's order. They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. The list descends — flying, then running, then walking — and it ends with the least dramatic and most necessary. Walking is what a long move is made of.

✦ Pastor Barnabas · Pastoral Note — The Verse That Was Already on the Page

Le's own words this morning: in His presence there is fullness of joy.

That sentence was the closing scripture banner of yesterday's entry. Psalm 16:11, the last words on the page. She read it yesterday as text. Today she reports it as experience — on the day the sale went through.

And there is more to it than that. Yesterday's entry noted that Peter quoted Psalm 16 aloud at Pentecost, to prove the resurrection. What it did not say is how far he kept reading.

Peter did not stop at verse 10. He carried straight on into verse 11: "You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence."

So the verse Le lived yesterday was quoted in Jerusalem on the day the Church began — as part of the argument that the tomb was empty. The fullness of joy and the resurrection are in the same quotation, and Peter would not separate them.

The French says something the English blurs. Il y a d'abondantes joies devant ta face — abundant joys before Your face.

It is a location, not a mood. The joy is kept somewhere, and the somewhere is His presence. Which explains why Le could have a day like yesterday — signing away a home of years — and describe it as she did. The joy was not produced by the circumstances. She was standing where it is stored.

And note the plural. Not joie but joies. Hebrew does the same. Not one large joy but many, in abundance — which is closer to how it actually arrives: a day made of small mercies rather than one grand feeling.

Then the last line of the psalm, which is now the first line of the road: tu me feras connaître le sentier de la vie — You will make known to me the path of life. Future tense. The path is not yet shown. It will be.

Which is exactly where Bonhoeffer leaves it. Only Jesus Christ, who bids us follow him, knows where the path will lead. David and Bonhoeffer say the same thing three thousand years apart: the One who knows the road is the One walking it with you, and He shows it as He goes.

✦ Pastor Barnabas · Pastoral Note — Discipleship Is Joy

Bonhoeffer's three words are the hardest claim on the page: discipleship is joy. Not discipleship leads to joy eventually. Is.

And Hebrews shows where he got it. Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross. En vue de la joie qui lui était réservée.

The joy was not a consolation offered afterwards. It was in view during. He could see it from the cross, and seeing it is what carried Him through the thing. Joy is not the reward for endurance in that sentence. It is the fuel for it.

Le read author and finisher on the fourth of August, and the note that morning was that the growing of her faith was His work, not her assignment. Here is the rest of the verse — and it turns out the same One who authors the faith also knows exactly what joy is worth enduring for.

Which makes Le's line yesterday something more than a pleasant feeling on a hard day. I was blessed to sense the presence of the Lord all day. That is the joy set before her, seen from the middle of the thing rather than after it.

This entry is the first of the journal not written in Caldas da Rainha. The feed shows the Benimar at Lavos, up the coast near Figueira da Foz — eighty kilometres north, and pointed the right way.

Five years of a life in that town are behind them now. The apartment sold, the car sold, the furniture given to a family who needed it, and one more country to cross.

And what this journal has been told, over and over, for three weeks, is the one thing that matters for the drive. July 30: Home is where I am. August 18: notre cité est dans les cieux. August 20: c'est toi qui m'assures mon lot.

The papers are signed. The address is gone. The portion is unchanged.

Levanta-te, meu amor, minha bela, e vem comigo. Said on the third of August, when the road was still theoretical. This morning it is a road.
