Psalm 1 — The Tree Planted by Streams of Water

Friday, August 21, 2026 · Midday
📍 Pedreiras, Portugal
"Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night."
Psalm 1:1–2 NKJV
✦ Psalm 1:1–3 · The Gateway Psalm

"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers."

"Heureux l'homme qui ne marche pas selon le conseil des méchants, qui ne s'arrête pas sur la voie des pécheurs, et qui ne s'assied pas en compagnie des moqueurs, mais qui trouve son plaisir dans la loi de l'Éternel, et qui la médite jour et nuit! Il est comme un arbre planté près d'un courant d'eau, qui donne son fruit en sa saison, et dont le feuillage ne se flétrit point: tout ce qu'il fait lui réussit."

Psaume 1:1–3 · Louis Segond

✦ Delight — Not Duty

The very first word of the entire Psalter: Blessed. And the blessed one is not described by achievement or position. The blessed one is described by two things: what they avoid and what they delight in.

The avoiding is a progression: walk — stand — sit. The wicked are passed. The sinners are paused with. The mockers are sat among. The descent is gradual — from walking past to settling in. The blessed one does not begin the descent.

But the delight is where the psalm lives. The Hebrew word carries the sense of pleasure, of desire, of bending toward something because you want to. The meditation is not imposed. It is chosen — because the soul finds its pleasure in the Word. Day and night. Not as duty. As delight. 🙏

✦ The Tree — Planted, Not Wild

Like a tree planted by streams of water. Not wild — planted. Placed by a gardener who chose the spot. Not by a single stream — by streams. The plural is the provision. The water is not scarce. It is abundant. And the tree does not go looking for water. The water comes to the tree — because the gardener planted it in the right place.

Yields its fruit in season. Not on demand. Not on the pilgrim's schedule. In God's timing. The fruit comes when the season is right — and the season is determined by the One who planted the tree, not the one who wants the fruit.

Whose leaf does not wither. The testing season may be hard. The March winds may blow — Spurgeon's old oaks from day ten. But the leaf does not wither. The tree holds. Because the streams are beneath it, and the gardener is watching it. 🙏

We have accomplished so much, yet we didn't. The Lord's presence was with us. His yoke is easy and our burden is light. He did it all — we just kept up with Him. 🙏

✦ Matthew 11:28–30

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

"Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et chargés, et je vous donnerai du repos. Prenez mon joug sur vous et recevez mes instructions, car je suis doux et humble de cœur; et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes. Car mon joug est doux et mon fardeau léger."

Matthieu 11:28–30 · Louis Segond

✦ He Did It All — We Just Kept Up

We accomplished so much, yet we didn't. Le names the paradox of the yoked life. The apartment — sold. The car — sold. The packing — done. Caldas da Rainha — behind them. And yet: He did it all. The yoke was shared. The burden was light. The presence did the heavy lifting.

Spurgeon's chariot of providence from day thirteen: the axle is infinite love, the driver is gracious wisdom. The passengers did not steer. They rode. The chariot arrived. And Le's testimony from the road is the simplest possible summary: we just kept up with Him.

The tree from Psalm 1 did not plant itself. It did not dig its own irrigation channel. It did not force its own fruit. The gardener planted. The streams watered. The fruit came in season. The tree's only job was to stay planted — and the staying was the keeping up. 🙏

"He did it all — we just kept up with Him."

The Tree — Planted

Not wild — planted. By streams, not a single stream. Fruit in season, not on demand. The leaf does not wither. The gardener chose the spot.

💧

Delight — Not Duty

The meditation is chosen because the soul finds its pleasure in the Word. Day and night. The blessed one bends toward the law of the Lord — with delight.

His Yoke Is Easy

We accomplished so much, yet we didn't. He did it all. The yoke is shared. The burden is light. The presence does the heavy lifting. We just kept up.

Psalm 1. The gateway psalm. The first entry from the road — Caldas da Rainha behind, France ahead, the rig in Pedreiras. And the psalm that opens the entire Psalter opens the new chapter.

Guyon's day thirty-three — the tree: "The tree planted by the rivers of water — substantial fruits ripening for eternity." And Psalm 1:3 — a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season. Guyon read this psalm and saw eternity's fruit. Le reads it today and sees the testing season's harvest — the apartment sold, the car sold, the road open. The fruit came in season.

Spurgeon's day nine — the springs: "All my springs are in You." Psalm 87:7. And Psalm 1 — planted by streams of water. The springs and the streams are the same water. The tree does not generate its own water. The streams come from God — and the tree that stays planted never runs dry.

Spurgeon's day ten — the old oaks: "Rooted by March winds, not April showers." The tree of Psalm 1 has been through the March winds of the testing season. The Caldas chapter was the wind. The roots went deeper. And the leaf did not wither.

Le's testimony — the yoked life: He did it all — we just kept up with Him. The most honest summary of the Caldas chapter. Every entry, every packing box, every escritura document, every moment of God — His yoke, His burden, His presence. Le and Roger stayed planted. The Gardener did the rest. And the fruit came in season — as Psalm 1 promised it would. 🙏
