The Just Shall Live by Faith — It Was Gifted to Me

Saturday, August 29, 2026 · Evening
📍 Jarnac-Champagne, France · Charente-Maritime
"For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."
Romans 1:17 · KJV
"Parce qu'en lui est révélée la justice de Dieu par la foi et pour la foi, selon qu'il est écrit: Le juste vivra par la foi."
Romains 1:17 · Louis Segond
✦ From Le's Heart · Jarnac-Champagne, France · August 29, 2026

I was never terrified of the righteousness of God — didn't know what it was or what it meant.

It was gifted to me by the Holy Spirit, by our gracious God. I was born again and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Can't praise Him enough for Jesus and my salvation. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The fifth evening in Jarnac-Champagne. And tonight — the contrast between the scholar and the child.

Martin Luther — monk, scholar, priest — spent years in terror of God's righteousness. He studied Greek. He agonized in his tower room. He wrestled with the text until the light broke through. He had to unlearn his theology to receive the grace.

Le — didn't know what righteousness was. Had nothing to unlearn. And received it as a gift. Directly. From the Holy Spirit.

Luther arrived after years of agony. Le arrived through simple not-knowing. Same righteousness. Same faith. Same gift. Same paradise.

It was gifted to me. The passive voice again. The Holy Spirit didn't wait for Le to understand righteousness before giving it. He gave it — and the understanding came after.

1 Timothy 1:13 — I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly. Le came not knowing. And God met the not-knowing with a gift.

Can't praise Him enough. That is 1 Timothy 1:17 — au roi des siècles, immortel, invisible — honneur et gloire!

✦ Romans 1:17 · The Verse That Changed the World

"For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."

"Parce qu'en lui est révélée la justice de Dieu par la foi et pour la foi, selon qu'il est écrit: Le juste vivra par la foi."

Romains 1:17 · Louis Segond
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"The righteousness of God." La justice de Dieu. Luther feared this — hearing God's demanding righteousness. Then the light broke: it is the righteousness God GIVES, not DEMANDS. Dikaiosynē theou — God's saving righteousness. The righteousness we receive — not achieve.

Luther: "I felt that I was altogether born again and had entered paradise through open gates." Le: I was born again and filled with the Holy Spirit. Same paradise. Same gates. The scholar arrived after wrestling. The child arrived through a gift she didn't yet understand.

"From faith to faith." Par la foi et pour la foi. Faith all the way through. Beginning, middle, end. No works mixed in. From faith — to faith. The journal: entry 1 to entry 172. From faith to faith. Always by faith. Never by achievement.

"The just shall live by faith." Le juste vivra par la foi. From Habakkuk 2:4. Three times in the New Testament:

In Romans — who are the just? Those who received God's righteousness by faith.

In Galatians — how? By faith — not by the law.

In Hebrews — what will they do? They shall live — persevere, endure.

One sentence. Three books. The whole gospel: the just — shall live — by faith.

✦ Romans 1:18 · Two Revelations

"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness."

"La colère de Dieu se révèle du ciel contre toute impiété et toute injustice des hommes qui retiennent injustement la vérité captive."

Romains 1:18 · Louis Segond
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

Verse 17: righteousness revealed. Verse 18: wrath revealed. Two revelations from the same God.

"Who hold the truth in unrighteousness." Qui retiennent la vérité captive. The French captures it — who hold the truth captive. Katechō — to suppress, hold down. Not people who never heard. People who HAVE the truth — and suppress it.

Le stands in contrast: I didn't know what it was. She did not suppress. She didn't have it yet. And when the Holy Spirit gifted it — she received. The difference is not knowledge. It is what you do with it. Receive — or suppress. Open the hand — or hold captive.

✦ Romans 1:19 · God Showed It

"Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them."

"Car ce qu'on peut connaître de Dieu est manifeste pour eux, Dieu le leur ayant fait connaître."

Romains 1:19 · Louis Segond
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"God hath showed it." Dieu le leur ayant fait connaître. The knowledge of God is not hidden. God showed it. He took the initiative. The truth is manifest — plain, visible.

"Manifest in them." Manifeste pour eux. Not just in sunsets. In them. The knowledge is written into the human heart.

Le's friend — the unbeliever who lets her share — God has already shown Himself to her. Le is not bringing God to someone who never encountered Him. She is uncovering what God already planted. The door is ajar because God opened it before Le arrived. The works prepared beforehand — include this friendship.

And Le herself — I didn't know what it was. But God knew Le. The truth was manifest before Le could name it. The Holy Spirit gifted it before Le could define it. The not-knowing was not a barrier. It was the open hand into which the gift was placed. 🙏

"It was gifted to me by the Holy Spirit, by our gracious God. I was born again and filled with the Holy Spirit. Can't praise Him enough for Jesus and my salvation."

The Righteousness of God

Not the righteousness God demands — the righteousness God gives. Luther's terror became paradise. Le received it before she could name it.

Gifted

It was gifted to me. The passive voice. The Spirit didn't wait for understanding. He gave — and the understanding came after.
