Tests are not meant to break you. They build strong character and patience.
Paul says to desire the things of the Spirit — greater, higher gifts.
The greatest gift is His presence in our lives. 🙏
The third evening in Rivières. Romans 5. The summit — and Le's testimony rises to meet it.
Tests are not meant to break you. Romans 5:3-4 in Le's words — the tribulation chain. Building, not breaking. The hard summer — the chain forged.
Desire the things of the Spirit — greater, higher gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:31. Le in July: I have to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts. The pilgrim reaches higher.
And the summit: the greatest gift is His presence. August 20: not what He can do — who He is. Romans 5:5: the love poured out by the Holy Spirit. The presence IS the love poured out. The greatest gift is God Himself, given.
"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."
"Étant donc justifiés par la foi, nous avons la paix avec Dieu par notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, à qui nous devons d'avoir eu par la foi accès à cette grâce, dans laquelle nous demeurons fermes, et nous nous glorifions dans l'espérance de la gloire de Dieu."
Romains 5:1-2 · Louis Segond"Therefore." Because of Romans 3-4 — we HAVE peace. Present tense. The war is over.
Romans 1:7 promised: grace and peace. Grace in chapters 3-4. Peace in chapter 5. Delivered.
"Access." Prosagōgē — introduced into the king's presence. Christ walks us through the door.
"Grace in which we stand." Nous demeurons fermes. Not grace we visit. Grace we stand in. Permanent ground.
"Hope of the glory of God." Romans 3:23: fall short of the glory. Now: hope of the glory. The falling short was not final. Hope is.
"And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us."
"Bien plus, nous nous glorifions même des afflictions, sachant que l'affliction produit la persévérance, la persévérance la victoire dans l'épreuve, et cette victoire l'espérance. Or, l'espérance ne trompe point, parce que l'amour de Dieu est répandu dans nos cœurs par le Saint-Esprit qui nous a été donné."
Romains 5:3-5 · Louis SegondLe: tests build, not break. Four links forged in fire:
Tribulation → Perseverance. L'affliction produit la persévérance. The hard summer — the heat, the tasks. Building the muscle of endurance.
Perseverance → Character. La victoire dans l'épreuve. Dokimē — tested, proven, refined like gold. Le kept going. Kept the Golden Rule. The perseverance refined the character.
Character → Hope. L'espérance. Tested hope. Forged hope. We see different paths and trust God to lead. That trust was forged in the hard summer.
"Hope does not disappoint." L'espérance ne trompe point. Why? Because the love of God was poured out — répandu — ekcheo — flooded, not dripped. By the Holy Spirit given to us.
Le: I was born again and filled with the Holy Spirit. It was gifted. This verse is Le's testimony. The love poured. The Spirit given. The hope anchored. The greatest gift — the presence — is the love poured out by the Spirit.
"For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
"Car, lorsque nous étions encore sans force, Christ, au temps marqué, est mort pour des impies. À peine mourrait-on pour un juste; quelqu'un peut-être mourrait pour un homme de bien. Mais Dieu prouve son amour envers nous, en ce que, lorsque nous étions encore des pécheurs, Christ est mort pour nous."
Romains 5:6-8 · Louis Segond"But God." Mais Dieu. The third turning point: Ephesians 2:4, Romans 3:21, and now Romans 5:8. Three "But Gods" — each one changes everything.
"While we were still sinners." Lorsque nous étions encore des pécheurs. Not after improvement. While still sinning. The love didn't wait. The love came to the mess.
Human love might die for a good person. Might. Divine love died for sinners. For enemies. The distance between human love and God's love — is the cross.
Le: I didn't graduate. Paul: Christ died while you were still there. The presence — the greatest gift — came to Le before Le could name what righteousness was.
"Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation."
"À plus forte raison donc, maintenant que nous sommes justifiés par son sang, serons-nous sauvés par lui de la colère. Car si, lorsque nous étions ennemis, nous avons été réconciliés avec Dieu par la mort de son Fils, à plus forte raison, étant réconciliés, serons-nous sauvés par sa vie. Et non seulement cela, mais encore nous nous glorifions en Dieu par notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, par qui maintenant nous avons obtenu la réconciliation."
Romains 5:9-11 · Louis Segond"Much more." À plus forte raison. The argument from greater to lesser:
If God justified enemies through His Son's death — much more He saves the reconciled through His Son's life.
If God gave His Son when you were His enemy — what would He withhold now that you are His child? The hard part is done. The cross is finished. Everything after is "much more."
"Received the reconciliation." Obtenu la réconciliation. Received. Not achieved. Le's passive voice — I was mercied. I was reconciled. It was received.
Le desires the greater gifts — and the greatest has already been given. His presence. His love poured. His Spirit within. Already received. Already present. Already poured. 🙏
"Tests are not meant to break you. They build strong character and patience. The greatest gift is His presence in our lives."
Le · Rivières, France · September 2, 2026 · The chain forged in fire — tribulation, perseverance, character, hope — and the greatest gift: His presencePeace with God
Therefore — we HAVE peace. Present tense. The war is over. Grace in 1:7 — delivered in chapter 5.
The Chain
Tribulation → perseverance → character → hope. Tests build, not break. The hard summer — forged in fire.
Poured Out
The love of God — ekcheo — flooded, not dripped. By the Holy Spirit. Hope does not disappoint.
But God
While we were still sinners. The third "But God." The love came to the mess. The gift before the improvement.
