I am persuaded means convinced.
We read the list of Paul's experiences, and he states with confidence that he is persuaded. His very experiences convinced him that nothing can separate him from the love of God. 🙏
The finale. Romans 8:28-39. The greatest passage in the greatest chapter in the greatest letter ever written. And Le names the key that unlocks it all.
I am persuaded means convinced. Paul's pepeismai is not theology learned from a book. It is conviction earned from experience. Paul was beaten, shipwrecked, starved, stoned, imprisoned, left for dead. He went through every item on the list — tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword — and came out still held. The love didn't let go. And THAT is why he is persuaded.
This brings the tribulation chain of Romans 5:3-4 to its final conclusion: tribulation → perseverance → character → hope → persuasion. The tests didn't break Paul. They convinced him. Every shipwreck was a data point. Every prison was proof. Every hunger was a test — and the love held every time.
Le said on September 2: tests are not meant to break you. They build strong character. And the final product of the building — conviction. Pepeismai. Le's own journey — the hard summer, the selling, the crossing, the unbearable world — and at the end: Finistère. The end of the earth. And Le is persuaded.
It's real. It's personal. It's true. That IS pepeismai.
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."
"Nous savons, du reste, que toutes choses concourent au bien de ceux qui aiment Dieu, de ceux qui sont appelés selon son dessein."
Romains 8:28 · Louis Segond"All things." Toutes choses. Panta. Not some things. ALL. The hard summer AND the olive trees. The exhaustion AND the fresh air. The unbearable world AND the beautiful plate. All of it — working together.
"Work together." Concourent. Synergei — cooperating, collaborating. Like ingredients. Flour alone is nothing. Heat alone burns. Salt alone is bitter. But together — bread. Le's journey — every piece cooperating toward the good God intends.
"The called according to His purpose." Appelés selon son dessein. Klētois. Le — the study comes full circle. Romans 1:1: Paul, called. Romans 1:6: you also are the called. Romans 1:7: called to be saints. And now Romans 8:28: called according to His purpose. The first word of the study is the last word of the study. Called — and the calling holds.
"For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified."
"Car ceux qu'il a connus d'avance, il les a aussi prédestinés à être semblables à l'image de son Fils, afin que son Fils fût le premier-né entre plusieurs frères. Et ceux qu'il a prédestinés, il les a aussi appelés; et ceux qu'il a appelés, il les a aussi justifiés; et ceux qu'il a justifiés, il les a aussi glorifiés."
Romains 8:29-30 · Louis SegondFive links. No gaps. No one falls out between them:
Foreknew. Connus d'avance. Before Caldas. Before the motorhome. God knew Le.
Predestined. Prédestinés. Not to arbitrary fate — to be conformed to the image of His Son. Every morning, every devotional — conforming.
Called. Appelés. Romans 1:1. The first word of the study.
Justified. Justifiés. Romans 3:24. Freely. Dōrean.
Glorified. Glorifiés. Past tense. Already done. God speaks of it as finished. The chain has no weak link. What God began — God completed. Nothing is left undone.
"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us."
"Que dirons-nous donc à l'égard de ces choses? Si Dieu est pour nous, qui sera contre nous? Lui, qui n'a point épargné son propre Fils, mais qui l'a livré pour nous tous, comment ne nous donnera-t-il pas aussi toutes choses avec lui? Qui accusera les élus de Dieu? C'est Dieu qui justifie! Qui les condamnera? Christ est mort; bien plus, il est ressuscité, il est à la droite de Dieu, et il intercède pour nous!"
Romains 8:31-34 · Louis SegondFive thundering questions — and every answer is silence:
"If God is for us, who can be against us?" No one.
"How shall He not freely give us all things?" The "much more" in its ultimate form. If God gave His Son — much more He will give everything else. Le: You sold our apartment. You will guide us.
"Who shall bring a charge?" Romans 8:1 — no condemnation. Now — no charge. Unchargeable.
"Who condemns?" No one. Christ died. Christ rose. Christ sits at the right hand. Christ intercedes. The Judge is the Advocate.
"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: 'For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.' Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."
"Qui nous séparera de l'amour de Christ? Sera-ce la tribulation, ou l'angoisse, ou la persécution, ou la faim, ou la nudité, ou le péril, ou l'épée? selon qu'il est écrit: C'est à cause de toi qu'on nous met à mort tout le jour, qu'on nous regarde comme des brebis destinées à la boucherie. Mais dans toutes ces choses nous sommes plus que vainqueurs par celui qui nous a aimés."
Romains 8:35-37 · Louis Segond"Who shall separate us?" THE question the letter has built toward.
The list: tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword. Not hypothetical. Paul lived every one. Le: his very experiences convinced him. The list is his proof that the love held.
"More than conquerors." Plus que vainqueurs. Hypernikōmen. Not barely surviving. HYPER-conquerors.
"Through Him who loved us." Last night: Jesus é vitorioso sobre o mundo. Tonight: more than conquerors THROUGH Him. His victory, our victory. Without His victory — no way. With His victory — hypernikōmen.
"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
"Car j'ai l'assurance que ni la mort ni la vie, ni les anges ni les dominations, ni les choses présentes ni les choses à venir, ni les puissances, ni la hauteur, ni la profondeur, ni aucune autre créature ne pourra nous séparer de l'amour de Dieu manifesté en Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur."
Romains 8:38-39 · Louis Segond"I am persuaded." J'ai l'assurance. Pepeismai. Le named the key: persuaded means convinced. His experiences convinced him.
Paul covers every dimension: death and life — existence. Angels, principalities, powers — the spiritual realm. Things present, things to come — all time. Height and depth — all space. Nor any other created thing. If it was created — it cannot separate.
"The love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." The last words of the doctrine. The letter began: Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus. It ends: the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. First word and last word. Called — and nothing can separate.
Le: it's real. It's personal. It's true. Paul: pepeismai. The same conviction. Born from experience of God's love that held when everything else failed. 🙏
"I am persuaded means convinced. His very experiences convinced him that nothing can separate him from the love of God."
