An Evil Heart of Unbelief in Departing from the Living God

Monday, September 8, 2026 · Afternoon
📍 Beauvoir, Route du Mont-Saint-Michel, France
"See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God."

« Prenez garde, frères, que quelqu'un de vous n'ait un cœur mauvais et incrédule, au point de se détourner du Dieu vivant. »

Hebrews 3:12 · NIV / Hébreux 3:12 · Louis Segond
✦ Hebrews 3:7–9 · The Wilderness Warning

"Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested and tried Me, though for forty years they saw what I did."

« Aujourd'hui, si vous entendez sa voix, n'endurcissez pas vos cœurs, comme lors de la révolte, le jour de la tentation dans le désert, où vos pères me tentèrent, pour m'éprouver, et ils virent mes œuvres pendant quarante ans. »

Hébreux 3:7–9 · Louis Segond

✦ Forty Years of Evidence Refused

Israel saw the pillar of fire. They ate the manna. They drank from the rock. They crossed the Red Sea. Forty years of miracles — and they hardened their hearts. The evil was not ignorance. Bernard's third category: knowing and departing. They had the evidence and refused the conclusion.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ Hebrews 3:12 · The Evil Heart

"See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God."

"An evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God."

— Hebrews 3:12 · Not weakness. Not struggle. Evil. The writer does not soften it.

✦ Three Things Locked Together

Evil — not weakness, not struggle, not honest doubt. Evil. The writer does not soften it.

Unbelief — the specific evil named. The refusal to trust what God has said. Bowen's boundless riches offered in vain because the heart will not receive.

Departing — the direction of the evil. Not standing still in confusion. Moving away. Leaving the living God — not a doctrine, not a system. A Person. The departure is personal.

✦ Le's Note · Beauvoir, France

"An evil heart is not a struggle, it is evil and it does not please God."

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ Hebrews 3:13 · Today

"But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called 'Today,' so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness."

« Mais exhortez-vous les uns les autres chaque jour, aussi longtemps qu'on peut dire : Aujourd'hui ! afin qu'aucun de vous ne s'endurcisse par la séduction du péché. »

Hébreux 3:13 · Louis Segond

✦ The Remedy Is Daily

The remedy is communal, not private. Encourage one another daily. The hardening happens in isolation. The antidote happens in community. And the word Today — not tomorrow, not when you feel ready. Today. Because hardening is progressive. Sin's deceitfulness works gradually. What is soft today becomes stone tomorrow if the voice is refused today.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ Hebrews 3:19 · The Conclusion

"So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief."

« Aussi voyons-nous qu'ils ne purent y entrer à cause de leur incrédulité. »

Hébreux 3:19 · Louis Segond

"They could not enter in because of unbelief."

— Hebrews 3:19 · The rest was there. The door was open. Unbelief kept them out.

The simplest sentence in the chapter. They could not enter. Not weakness. Not circumstances. Not enemies. Unbelief. The rest was there. The promise was real. The door was open. And they could not enter — because they departed from the living God.

⚠️

The Evil Heart

Not weakness, not struggle. Evil. Unbelief. Departing from the living God. The writer does not soften it because softening it would be sin's deceitfulness at work.

📅

Today

Not tomorrow. The voice says today. Hardening is progressive. What is soft today becomes stone tomorrow. The remedy is daily encouragement, not private isolation.

🚪

They Could Not Enter

The rest was there. The door was open. Unbelief kept them out. The simplest and most sobering sentence in Hebrews 3.

"So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief."

« Aussi voyons-nous qu'ils ne purent y entrer à cause de leur incrédulité. »

Hebrews 3:19 · NKJV / Hébreux 3:19 · Louis Segond · An evil heart · Today, if you hear His voice
