"He is glorified when the believer is delivered from his gloom without being delivered from that which caused the gloom. This finds itself vanquished when it seems to be most triumphant; and is utterly at a loss to understand how its instruments of torture should produce no longer any pain."
The gloom should not interfere. It's not asking to take away the gloom, but to glorify God anyway.
Even Jesus asked the Lord to take away the cup, but He trusted the Lord for His goodness. 🙏
The third evening on Sword Beach. Two voices — Paul in Romans 15, George Bowen on Isaiah 49:13. Saying the same thing.
Paul: through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures we might have hope. Bowen: God comforts not by changing providence but by opening the heart to His Word. The comfort comes through the Word — not through changed circumstances.
Le heard the deepest line: the gloom should not interfere. Glorify God anyway. That word — anyway — is the whole gospel. The gloom is present. The instruments deployed. And the believer glorifies God anyway. The glory and the gloom coexist — and the glory wins.
And then Le completed the revelation: even Jesus asked to take away the cup, but He trusted the Lord for His goodness. The asking is not wrong. Jesus asked. The prayer was honest, real, human. But the trust came after the asking. Not instead of asking — after it. You can ask for the cup to be removed — and trust God's goodness when it stays. The trust is in His character, not in His answer. Whatever the answer — the goodness holds.
"We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, 'The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.'"
"Nous qui sommes forts, nous devons supporter les faiblesses de ceux qui ne le sont pas, et ne pas nous complaire en nous-mêmes. Que chacun de nous complaise au prochain pour ce qui est bien en vue de l'édification. Car Christ ne s'est point complu en lui-même, mais, selon qu'il est écrit: Les outrages de ceux qui t'insultent sont tombés sur moi."
Romains 15:1-3 · Louis Segond"Bear with the weak." Supporter les faiblesses. Chapter 14: don't judge. Chapter 15: carry them.
"Christ did not please Himself." Christ prayed the cup might be taken away. The cup stayed. The Father answered — not by removal, but by strength to drink it. Le: He trusted the Lord for His goodness. The trust is in the character. The goodness holds — whatever the answer.
"For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope."
"Or, tout ce qui a été écrit d'avance l'a été pour notre instruction, afin que, par la patience et par la consolation que donnent les Écritures, nous possédions l'espérance."
Romains 15:4 · Louis SegondThe purpose statement of Le's journal. Scriptures → learning → patience → comfort → hope.
The tribulation chain's twin: 5:3-4: tribulation → perseverance → hope. 15:4: Scriptures → patience → hope. One forged by trial. One forged by the Word. The pilgrim needs both.
"Patience." Hypomonē — the same word from 5:3-4, 8:25, 12:12. The Scriptures produce the very perseverance the trials demand.
"Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."
"Que le Dieu de la persévérance et de la consolation vous donne d'avoir les mêmes sentiments les uns envers les autres selon Jésus-Christ, afin que tous ensemble, d'une seule bouche, vous glorifiiez le Dieu et Père de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ."
Romains 15:5-6 · Louis Segond"The God of patience and comfort." God Himself described by the words the Scriptures produce. He is the patience. He is the comfort.
"One mind, one mouth — glorify God." The destination. The body of chapter 12. The non-judging of 14. The bearing of 15. All converging: glory.
Le: glorify God anyway. The gloom present. The cause remaining. And the mouth opens — not in complaint — in glory.
"The Lord comforts his people, ordinarily, not by changing the course of his providence, not by crowning them with an outward prosperity, but by opening their heart to attend unto the precious declarations of his word."
"He is glorified when the believer is delivered from his gloom without being delivered from that which caused the gloom. This finds itself vanquished when it seems to be most triumphant; and is utterly at a loss to understand how its instruments of torture should produce no longer any pain."
George Bowen · Daily Meditations · On Isaiah 49:13George Bowen (1816-1888) — missionary to India. Radical poverty. Radical prose. And the deepest line Le has brought to the journal:
Delivered from gloom without being delivered from its cause. The hard summer not removed. O mundo é insuportável — the world still unbearable. But Le has hope. Peace. Presence. Delivered from gloom while the cause stands.
The gloom thought it won. Instruments deployed. And they produce no pain. Le: tests build, not break. Bowen: instruments of torture producing no pain. Same testimony. Two centuries apart. Same holy ground.
And Le's completion: even Jesus asked. But He trusted the Lord for His goodness. Asking AND trusting. Together. The cup stayed. The goodness stayed too. And the goodness was enough. 🙏
"The gloom should not interfere. It's not asking to take away the gloom, but to glorify God anyway. Even Jesus asked — but He trusted the Lord for His goodness."
Le · Lion-sur-Mer, Sword Beach · September 12, 2026 · Delivered from the gloom, not from its cause — comfort through the Word, trust in His goodness, glory anywayComfort through the Word
God comforts by opening the heart to His Word — not by changing the road. Scriptures produce patience, comfort, hope.
Glorify God Anyway
The gloom should not interfere. Not asking to remove it — glorify God in the midst. Anyway.
Instruments Vanquished
Deployed and defeated. The torture produces no pain. The gloom vanquished from within. Utterly at a loss.
Trust His Goodness
Jesus asked for the cup to pass. It stayed. He trusted — for His goodness. The goodness holds. Whatever the answer.
