"Since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it."
« Craignons donc, tandis que la promesse d'entrer dans son repos subsiste encore, qu'aucun de vous ne paraisse être resté en arrière. Car cette bonne nouvelle nous a été annoncée aussi bien qu'à eux ; mais la parole qui leur fut annoncée ne leur servit de rien, parce qu'elle ne trouva pas de la foi chez ceux qui l'entendirent. »
Hébreux 4:1–2 · Louis Segond✦ The Promise Remains
The promise remains. It was not withdrawn when Israel failed. But the word they heard did not profit them — not being mixed with faith. The word was real. The promise was real. But without faith, the word is seed on stone. It lands but does not enter. Guyon's bee must rest on the flower — not fly past.
"For we who have believed do enter that rest... although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 'And God rested on the seventh day from all His works.'"
« Pour nous qui avons cru, nous entrons dans le repos, selon qu'il dit : Je jurai dans ma colère qu'ils n'entreront pas dans mon repos ! Il dit cela, quoique ses œuvres eussent été achevées depuis la création du monde. »
Hébreux 4:3–5 · Louis Segond✦ The Rest Built into Creation
The rest was established before Israel existed, before the wilderness, before the disobedience. God rested on the seventh day — not because He was tired, but because the work was complete. Hebrews 1:3: He sat down. The sitting and the resting are the same truth. The work is finished. The rest He entered is the rest He offers.
"For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God."
« Car, si Josué leur eût donné le repos, il ne parlerait pas après cela d'un autre jour. Il y a donc un repos de sabbat réservé au peuple de Dieu. »
Hébreux 4:8–9 · Louis Segond"There remains therefore a rest for the people of God."
— Hebrews 4:9 · Not the absence of waves. The plank amid the billows. Still open. Still available. Still offered.Joshua brought Israel into the land. But that was not the rest. If it had been, David would not have written "Today" centuries later. The land was not the rest. The Sabbath day was not the rest. Both pointed deeper — to a rest that remains. Bowen on June 18: the sabbatical rest — the plank amid the billows. Not the absence of waves. The solid thing to hold while the waves continue.
"For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His."
« Car celui qui entre dans le repos de Dieu se repose de ses œuvres, comme Dieu s'est reposé des siennes. »
Hébreux 4:10 · Louis Segond✦ Ceased from His Works
God's rest was not inactivity. It was completion. And our rest is not inactivity — it is the cessation of our own efforts to save ourselves, to earn God's favor, to achieve what only grace can give. Guyon's teaching: cease to blow the fire. Let the weight of love fall toward its center. The prayer of simplicity is the rest of Hebrews 4 — the soul that has stopped striving and entered the finished work of Christ.
"Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest... For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account."
« Efforçons-nous donc d'entrer dans ce repos. Car la parole de Dieu est vivante et efficace, plus tranchante qu'une épée quelconque à deux tranchants, pénétrante jusqu'à partager âme et esprit, jointures et moelles ; elle juge les sentiments et les pensées du cœur. Nulle créature n'est cachée devant lui, mais tout est à nu et à découvert aux yeux de celui à qui nous devons rendre compte. »
Hébreux 4:11–13 · Louis Segond✦ The Division Is the Doorway
Be diligent to enter that rest — for the word of God is living and powerful. The Word is the instrument that enables the rest. It divides soul from spirit — showing which efforts are self-striving and which are the movement of God. The Word cuts away what prevents the rest. The division is the doorway. Through the division, the rest.
Le said on August 2: "Prestação de contas é o relacionamento." Accountability is the relationship. And the Word that divides soul from spirit is not punishment — it is the surgeon's blade, cutting to heal.
Mixed with Faith
The promise remains. The word is real. But without faith, it profits nothing. Seed on stone. The bee must rest on the flower.
The Plank amid Billows
There remains a rest. Not the absence of waves. The solid thing to hold. Ceased from his works as God did from His. The finished work entered.
The Word Opens the Way
Living, powerful, sharper than any sword. The division of soul and spirit is the doorway to the rest. Through the division, the rest.
