Paul spoke directly to me when he says: "And what do you have that you did not receive?"
We do that — but really, what do I have that I did not receive? Every single thing we have, God gave to us.
Fools for Christ — the best place to be, because our vision of Christ is clearer.
Be a fool, and let Christ be the wisdom and the path you want to follow. 🙏
The second evening at Le Pertre. And Le says Paul spoke directly to her — which is exactly what verse 7 is built to do. It is a question, not a statement. It does not tell you anything. It makes you answer.
And Le answered: every single thing we have, God gave to us.
This verse carries her entire arc. I was mercied because God is merciful. It was gifted to me by the Holy Spirit. I didn't graduate from sinner to saint. Received. Received. Received. Since August, the same passive voice — and now Paul asks the question that makes it unanswerable.
Then she goes further, into territory Paul never states outright: fools for Christ — the best place to be, because our vision of Christ is clearer.
The fool's seat has the better view. Worldly wisdom is not merely useless here — it stands in the way. Take it down, and you can see. Becoming a fool is not a punishment. It is a clearing of the line of sight.
And the last line joins two things: let Christ be the wisdom and the path. He became for us wisdom (1:30). I am the way (John 14:6). The wisdom and the path are the same Person. So the fool is not left with nothing. The fool is left with Christ — and nothing standing in front of Him.
"Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful... In fact, I do not even judge myself... but He who judges me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes... Then each one's praise will come from God."
"Ainsi, qu'on nous regarde comme des serviteurs de Christ, et des dispensateurs des mystères de Dieu. Du reste, ce qu'on demande des dispensateurs, c'est que chacun soit trouvé fidèle... Je ne me juge pas non plus moi-même... Celui qui me juge, c'est le Seigneur. C'est pourquoi ne jugez de rien avant le temps, jusqu'à ce que vienne le Seigneur... Alors chacun recevra de Dieu la louange qui lui sera due."
1 Corinthiens 4:1-5 · Louis Segond"Stewards." Dispensateurs. Oikonomos — the household manager. He owns nothing. He administers what belongs to another. Which is verse 7 already, in a single noun.
"It is required that one be found faithful." Que chacun soit trouvé fidèle. Not successful. Not impressive. Not right in every argument. Faithful. That is the whole job description.
"I do not even judge myself." Paul removes three courts at once: the Corinthians' court, the human court, and his own. "He who judges me is the Lord." Romans 14 said: do not judge your brother. Here Paul adds: do not sit as judge over yourself either.
"Then each one's praise will come from God." Chacun recevra de Dieu la louange. The praise comes FROM God. Not from the church. Not from critics. Not from self-assessment. So judge nothing before the time — the verdict is not yours to write.
"...that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?"
"...afin que vous appreniez en nos personnes à ne pas aller au delà de ce qui est écrit, et que nul de vous ne conçoive de l'orgueil en faveur de l'un contre l'autre. Car qui est-ce qui te distingue? Qu'as-tu que tu n'aies reçu? Et si tu l'as reçu, pourquoi te glorifies-tu, comme si tu ne l'avais pas reçu?"
1 Corinthiens 4:6-7 · Louis Segond"What do you have that you did not receive?" Qu'as-tu que tu n'aies reçu? Ti de echeis ho ouk elabes.
Paul does not argue. He asks. And the question can only be answered one way, because every item on the list is received. Breath. Faith. Understanding. Gifts. The Word itself. Not one thing earned.
Le: every single thing we have, God gave to us. That is the only answer the question permits.
And the sting is in the last clause: "why do you boast AS IF you had not received it?" Boasting is not wrong because it is loud. It is wrong because it is false. It claims authorship of a gift. The pretending is the problem.
"Not to think beyond what is written." Stay with the Word. Don't build towers on top of it. Le, three nights ago: don't overthink, just worship.
"We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong!... To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat."
"Nous sommes fous à cause de Christ; mais vous, vous êtes sages en Christ; nous sommes faibles, mais vous êtes forts... Jusqu'à cette heure, nous souffrons la faim, la soif, la nudité; nous sommes maltraités, errants çà et là; nous nous fatiguons à travailler de nos propres mains; injuriés, nous bénissons; persécutés, nous supportons; calomniés, nous parlons avec bonté."
1 Corinthiens 4:10-13 · Louis Segond"Fools for Christ's sake." Fous à cause de Christ. Mōroi dia Christon. Chapter 1 returns: the foolishness of God is wiser than men. And Paul takes the fool's seat willingly.
And Le sees what Paul leaves unsaid: the fool's seat has the better view. Our vision of Christ is clearer. Worldly wisdom does not merely fail to help — it obstructs. 1 Corinthians 3:18: let him become a fool, that he may become wise. Not a demotion. A clearing of the line of sight.
"Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat." Injuriés, nous bénissons. Romans 12:21 in the flesh: overcome evil with good. Not theory — Paul's daily practice, while hungry and homeless.
"For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power."
"Car le royaume de Dieu ne consiste pas en paroles, mais en puissance."

1:17 — not with wisdom of words, lest the cross be emptied.
2:4-5 — not with persuasive words, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.
4:20 — not in word but in POWER.
Dynamis — the same word as Romans 1:16, where this whole study began. Words can be impressive and empty. The kingdom is not a debate. It is a power.
Le, three nights ago: don't overthink, just worship. The kingdom is not in word.
And Paul's closing question is tender, not stern: shall I come with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness? He would rather come gently. He always would. 🙏

The Clearer View
The fool's seat has the better view. Worldly wisdom does not just fail to help — it obstructs. Take it down and see.
Stewards, Not Owners
Oikonomos — the manager owns nothing. Required: faithful, not successful. And the praise comes from God.
Not Word but Power
