Woke up today with this song in my head.
Tomorrow we will visit a home for sale. 🙏
The Benimar is back in Henvic — Finistère. Finis terrae again. Two weeks ago, at the end of the earth, Le read the Spirit intercedes with groanings which cannot be uttered. Tonight she wakes with a song from a cave.
The songs keep showing up. Trust and Obey. Blessed Assurance. And now a psalm — and the psalms were always songs. David wrote this one to be sung. Le woke already singing what he sang in the dark.
And the Spirit chose the right song for the eve of a house visit.
Porção — in the Hebrew, chēleq. It is the word for an allotted share of land. When Israel entered Canaan, every tribe received its chēleq — its portion, its plot. Except the Levites. They received no land. And God said to them: "I am thy part and thine inheritance" (Numbers 18:20).
David in the cave had no land either — a fugitive with nothing. And he sings: You are my portion. Not a field. You.
So tomorrow Le goes to see a home — with her portion already settled. Whether this house is the one or not, it cannot add to her inheritance or take from it. She goes with open hands. Five days ago she taught it herself: Yes to His promises.
And September 3, the day she arrived in Brittany: "You sold our apartment. You will guide us to our new home." Então conheceste a minha vereda — He already knows the path to it.
Refúgio me faltou; ninguém cuidou da minha alma.
Salmos 142 · Salmo didático de Davi"I cried unto the LORD with my voice... I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path."
"De ma voix je crie à l'Éternel, de ma voix j'implore l'Éternel. Je répands ma plainte devant lui, je lui raconte ma détresse. Quand mon esprit est abattu au dedans de moi, toi, tu connais mon sentier."
Psaume 142:2-4 · Louis Segond"Derramei a minha queixa." I poured out my complaint. Poured — not arranged, not edited. David does not tidy his prayer before bringing it. He empties it out. Le, September 12: the asking is not wrong. Neither is the pouring.
"Então conheceste a minha vereda." Then thou knewest my path. Então — then. Not after the distress lifted. In it. The very moment David could not see the way, God already knew it.
Le, September 1: we see different paths and trust God to lead us to the right path. The path is not unknown. It is only unknown to us.
"I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living."
"Jette les yeux à droite, et regarde! Personne ne me reconnaît, tout refuge est perdu pour moi, nul ne prend souci de mon âme. Éternel! c'est à toi que je crie. Je dis: Tu es mon refuge, mon partage sur la terre des vivants."
Psaume 142:5-6 · Louis SegondThe turn of the whole psalm is between two lines.
Verse 4: Refúgio me faltou. No refuge.
Verse 5: Tu és o meu refúgio. You are my refuge.
Nothing in the cave changed between those lines. Saul was still hunting. The walls were still stone. David changed where he was looking.
Olhei para a minha direita — he looked to his right hand, where a defender would stand in a court or a battle. Empty. So he looked up.
"A minha porção." Mon partage. Chēleq — the allotted share of land. The Levites got no field; God said, I am your portion. David had no field; he said, You are my portion. And na terra dos viventes — in the land of the living. Not only in heaven. Here, now, in this life, God is the inheritance.
That is how one visits a house with open hands.
"Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low... Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me."
"Sois attentif à mes cris! Car je suis bien malheureux... Tire mon âme de sa prison, afin que je célèbre ton nom! Les justes viendront m'entourer, quand tu m'auras fait du bien."
Psaume 142:7-8 · Louis Segond"Tira a minha alma da prisão, para que louve o teu nome." That I may praise thy name. David asks for release — and names what it is for. Not comfort for its own sake. Praise.
"Os justos me rodearão." The righteous shall compass me about. The psalm that begins alone ends surrounded. Empty in verse 4 — full by verse 7.
And history bore it out. 1 Samuel 22, the cave of Adullam: every one that was in distress... gathered themselves unto him. Four hundred came to the cave. The loneliest psalm has a crowded ending.
"Pois me fizeste bem." For thou shalt deal bountifully with me. The last word is His goodness. Le, September 12: He trusted the Lord for His goodness. 🙏
"Tu és o meu refúgio, e a minha porção na terra dos viventes."

Trust and Obey. Blessed Assurance. Now Psalm 142 — and the psalms were always songs. Woke already singing it.
A Minha Porção
Chēleq — an allotted share of land. The Levites got none: I am thy portion. So one visits a house with open hands.
Então Conheceste
Then — in the distress, not after — You knew my path. The path is not unknown. Only unknown to us.
From Cave to Company
No refuge in verse 4. You are my refuge in verse 5. Surrounded by verse 7. Four hundred came to Adullam.
