Cast Thy Burden — He Shall Sustain Thee

"Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved."
Psalm 55:22 · KJV
"Remets ton sort à l'Éternel, et il te soutiendra, il ne laissera jamais chanceler le juste."
Psaume 55:23 · Louis Segond
✦ From Le's Heart · Guerlédan, Côtes-d'Armor · September 23, 2026

As we deal with a possible purchase, I was grateful to read: "Cast your burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain you."

We sense God's lead in our lives, and we trust Him. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The Benimar at Guerlédan — the lake, in central Brittany. And Smith brings Le the companion to a verse she read on the road out of Portugal.

August 21, at Pedreiras: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden... my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. And Le said then: the burden has been light. Tonight, the other half of it: cast it on Him.

And note what Smith does not promise. He never says God will simplify matters. He says God will enable you to leave your intricate affairs in His hands. A purchase is exactly that — an intricate affair. The tangle stays tangled. It simply changes hands.

And it is the same prayer Le prayed the day she reached Brittany, three weeks ago: "You sold our apartment. You will guide us to our new home." She cast that burden then. She is still standing on it now.

Cast — and He sustains. Not cast, and it vanishes. He feeds you through it.

✦ James Smith · "Cast Thy Burden Upon the Lord" · Psalm 55:22

"The Lord's people are often heavy laden, their burdens are heavy and their grief great; but the Lord kindly directs them to cast every burden upon Him, and promises to sustain them... Losses, crosses, enemies, temptations, and the inward conflict, often burden the soul; but our God will sanctify them to us, sustain us through them, and deliver us out of them all."

"Our God has determined that we shall use Him, feel our dependance upon Him, and glory only in Him. Believer, He will sustain thee by speaking peace to thy troubled heart; by enabling you to leave your intricate affairs in His hands; by strengthening you with strength in your soul; and by enabling you to contrast the present with the future."

James Smith · On Psalm 55:22
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"Sanctify them to us, sustain us through them, and deliver us out of them." Three verbs, and only the last one removes anything. Smith is honest: the burden is first sanctified and endured — and only then lifted.

"Our God has determined that we shall use Him." A startling phrase — God wants to be leaned on. The dependence is not a weakness He tolerates. It is the arrangement He chose.

"Glory only in Him." 1 Corinthians 1:31, a week ago: He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Smith lands on the same word.

"Contrast the present with the future." Romans 8:18, three weeks ago: the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

✦ Psalm 55:22 · The Word Used Only Once

"Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved."

"Remets ton sort à l'Éternel, et il te soutiendra, il ne laissera jamais chanceler le juste."

Psaume 55:23 · Louis Segond
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"Thy burden." The Hebrew word here — yehav — appears nowhere else in the Old Testament. Translators render it burden; many read it as "what has been given you" — your lot, your allotted portion. The French keeps that sense: remets ton sort — hand over your lot.

And Le — that is the word from two nights ago. A minha porção. Whatever has been apportioned to you — the heavy part included — is cast back on the One who apportioned it.

"He shall sustain thee." Il te soutiendra. Yekalkel — from a root meaning to nourish, to provide, to feed through. It is the word used of Joseph sustaining his family through the famine. Not merely propping you up. Feeding you through the lean stretch.

"He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved." Il ne laissera jamais chanceler le juste. Chanceler — to stagger, to wobble. Not "you will never be burdened." "You will never be toppled."

✦ Matthew 11:28-30 · The Other Half

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest... for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

"Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et chargés, et je vous donnerai du repos... Car mon joug est doux, et mon fardeau léger."

Matthieu 11:28-30 · Louis Segond
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

David says: cast it on Him. Jesus says: come to Me. Same instruction, both directions. The burden goes one way; the person goes the other. Both end in the same place.

Le read this at Pedreiras, four days into the crossing out of Portugal, and testified: the Lord sure changed our lives, and it was easy. The burden has been light.

That testimony was given before this purchase existed. It still holds. The yoke that carried her out of Caldas is the yoke she is wearing now.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ James Smith · The Prayer

"Thou, O Lord, in tender love,
Wilt all my burdens bear!
Lift my heart to things above,
And fix it ever there!"

James Smith · Prayer on Psalm 55:22
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"And fix it ever there." The burden is not the end of the prayer. The fixing is. Smith asks for the weight to be carried — and then for the heart to be anchored somewhere the weight cannot reach.

Le: we sense God's lead in our lives, and we trust Him. That is a heart already fixed.

Whatever comes of this house — the lead is His, the sustaining is His, and the portion was settled long before the first viewing. 🙏

"As we deal with a possible purchase, I was grateful to read: 'Cast your burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain you.' We sense God's lead in our lives, and we trust Him."

Cast Thy Burden

Yehav — a word used only here. "Hand over your lot." Whatever was apportioned, cast back on the One who apportioned it.

🌾

He Shall Sustain

Yekalkel — to nourish, to feed through. The word for Joseph sustaining his family in famine. Not propped up. Fed.

🧵

Intricate Affairs

Smith never promises simplification. The tangle stays tangled — it just changes hands.

⚓

Fix It Ever There

Never suffered to be moved — chanceler, to stagger. Not "never burdened." Never toppled.

"Remets ton sort à l'Éternel, et il te soutiendra, il ne laissera jamais chanceler le juste."
