Listening to Psalm 91, set to music by John Michael Talbot.

The reason for a long life: to show him my salvation, says the Lord. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The second night at Beauvoir, under the Mount. And Le hears Psalm 91 the way it was first meant to be received — sung. Psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, three nights ago in Colossians. The songs keep arriving, and tonight one of them was the psalm itself.

And Le reads the last verse exactly the way Simeon lived it.

Luke 2:26: it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. An old man kept alive for one purpose — to see. And when he held the child in the temple: "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation."

The long life was not the gift. It was the time needed to be shown the gift.

And the Hebrew makes it plainer still. "My salvation" — yeshuati. From yeshuah — the root of the name Yeshua. Jesus.

"I will show him my Yeshua." Simeon was shown exactly that — in his own arms.

✦ Psalm 91:1-2 · Lodging in the Shadow

"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'"

Psalm 91:1-2 · NIV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

Psalm 91 was written for someone who sleeps in a different place every night.

"Will rest." Yitlonan — from lîn, to lodge for the night. It is the word for a traveller stopping over — Jacob at Bethel, with a stone for a pillow. Not a permanent house. One night's stay.

And it is paired with "dwells" — yoshev, to settle, to remain. The traveller lodges somewhere new each night — but the shelter he lodges in never moves.

That is Le and Roger exactly. Different field, different town, different shore. Same shadow.

"He is my refuge." Machseh. Le — Psalm 142, twelve nights ago, the song you woke with: Tu és o meu refúgio. The same word. There David first said refuge failed me, and only then You are my refuge. Here it is settled before the second verse ends.

✦ Psalm 91:3-8 · Under His Wings

"Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day..."

Psalm 91:3-5 · NIV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"He will cover you with his feathers." Of all the pictures the psalmist could have chosen for God's protection, he chose the softest one. Not a wall. A bird folding over her young.

And Jesus used it of Himself. Matthew 23:37: how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings. The Almighty of verse 1 is the mother bird of verse 4.

"His faithfulness will be your shield." Emet — truth, firmness. Last night, 2 Thessalonians 3:3: the Lord is faithful. The shield is not something He holds. It is what He is.

"The terror of night... the arrow that flies by day." Night and day both covered. No shift change in the protection.

✦ Psalm 91:9-13 · Near Your Tent

"If you say, 'The Lord is my refuge,' and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

Psalm 91:9-12 · NIV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"No disaster will come near your tent." Ohel — a tent. Not a fortress, not a house — the movable dwelling. Le's home has wheels. His promise reaches it anyway.

"He will command his angels." One honest note, because Jesus made it. These are the lines Satan quoted at Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:6) — cast thyself down; He will catch you. And Jesus refused: thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

The promise is a shelter to rest in, not a dare to test. The tempter quoted the verse. The Son trusted the One who wrote it.

✦ Psalm 91:14-16 · God Speaks — Eight Times "I Will"

"'Because he loves me,' says the Lord, 'I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.'"

Psalm 91:14-16 · NIV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

For fourteen verses someone speaks about God. In the last three, God speaks for Himself. And He says I will eight times — rescue, protect, answer, be with, deliver, honour, satisfy, show.

"Because he loves me." Chashaq — to cling, to be bound to in love. The word for a heart set on someone. Not because he is strong. Because he holds on.

"He will call on me, and I will answer him." Romans 10:13, at Évellys: whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

"I will be with him in trouble." Not before it. Not instead of it. In it. Le, six nights ago: He takes care of us. And Smith, in September: delivered from his gloom without being delivered from that which caused it.

"With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation." Le's reading is the right one: the two clauses are not two separate gifts. The years are given so the seeing can happen. Simeon waited his whole life for one afternoon in the temple — and called it enough. 🙏

"The reason for a long life: to show him my salvation, says the Lord."

Lodging for the Night

Lîn — the traveller's word. A new place each night, but the shelter never moves. Different field, same shadow.

🪶

Under His Wings

The softest picture of protection in Scripture — and Jesus took it for Himself: as a hen gathers her chickens.

🕯️

In Trouble, Not Instead

Eight times "I will." And the one that holds the rest: I will be with him in trouble. He takes care of us.

Show Him My Yeshua

Yeshuati — the root of Jesus' name. Simeon was kept alive to see it, and held it in his arms.

"Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation."
Luke 2:29-30 · KJV · Simeon in the temple
