A Closed Door, A New Vision — My God Shall Supply

"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:19 · KJV

God is faithful to us, always.

Closing the door to France, God will supply all our needs — including a new vision for the future. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

The Benimar has crossed Normandy east to Luneray, in the Pays de Caux near Dieppe. And Smith, four nights running, brings Le back to Philippians 4 — ten verses past where she stopped on September 29.

That night she read be careful for nothing (4:6). Tonight Smith gives the reason: my God shall supply. The command not to be anxious, and the promise that makes it possible, sit in the same chapter.

And Smith says it plainly: our needs should remind us of God's promises. A need is not only a lack. It is a reminder.

And tonight Le brings a closed door to the promise. Closing the door to France, God will supply all our needs — including a new vision for the future.

On September 14, at Sword Beach, Le prayed: God will open doors! The One who opens doors also closes them. Revelation 3:7: he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth. Both hands are His.

And notice what Le counts among the needs: a new vision. Not only bread and shelter. Direction, too, is a need — and it is on the list God supplies.

✦ Philippians 4:18-19 · Who Was Promised

"But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:18-19 · KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

Read the verse before it. The Philippians had just sent Paul a gift in prison — and they were not a wealthy church. 2 Corinthians 8:2 says the Macedonian churches gave out of their deep poverty.

So the promise of verse 19 is spoken to people who had just given away what they could not easily spare. Paul is saying: you supplied my need — now my God will supply yours.

"My God." Ho de Theos mou. Not "God." My God. Paul is vouching from experience — from shipwreck, prison and hunger. He knows exactly who he is promising on behalf of.

"According to his riches." Kata to ploutos. Not out of His riches — according to them. A rich man may give a small gift out of his wealth. To give according to it is to give at the scale of it.

✦ James Smith · They Had Needs — So Have We

"So Paul assured believers at Philippi, and so he assures us. They had many needs — so have we. They were dependent on God — and so are we. The Lord engaged to supply them, and He is engaged to supply us. The Lord was faithful to them, and He will be faithful to us."

James Smith · On Philippians 4:19

"All your need." Pasan chreian. Need — not want.

Le — September 16, one of your most important testimonies: "Sometimes God says No. The promises of God are Yes and Amen — and that does not include saying Yes to everything I want. It's Yes to His promises."

This verse is exactly that. He promises every need, without exception — and He reserves the right to say no to a want. You named the distinction three weeks before Smith handed you the verse.

"He is engaged to supply us." Smith's word engaged means bound by pledge — committed, under contract. Last night: he is in office on purpose. Tonight: he is engaged. Smith keeps describing God's care as an obligation God has freely put Himself under.

✦ James Smith · Not One Thing Has Failed

"His absolute promises are our invaluable treasure; His unchangeableness is our immovable security. While Jehovah lives, we cannot be friendless; we shall never be left to lack; and at last we shall be able to testify, 'Not one thing has failed of all that the LORD our God has promised.'"

James Smith · On Philippians 4:19
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"Not one thing has failed." Joshua 23:14 — Joshua, old, at the end of the conquest: ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

He says not one thing hath failed twice in one verse. An old man looking back over the whole journey, counting.

"We shall never be left to lack." Psalm 23:1: the LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. And last night, Proverbs 19:23: he that hath it shall abide satisfied.

Le — September 3, arriving in Brittany: nothing is left undone with the Lord. That is Joshua's testimony in the present tense.

✦ James Smith · Hitherto

"We can this morning rejoice and say, 'The Lord has blessed me until now. You have dealt well with Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word.' Our needs should remind us of God's promises; the promises should be used to quell our fears and comfort our hearts. We know not what a day will bring forth — but we know that 'my God shall supply all your need.' Let this banish care, and let us rejoice in the Lord as our Provider."

James Smith · On Philippians 4:19
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"The Lord has blessed me until now." Joshua 17:14: the LORD hath blessed me hitherto. And 1 Samuel 7:12 — Samuel sets up a stone and calls it Ebenezer: hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

Hitherto looks backward and forward at once. "Up to here He has helped" — which means "and from here, too."

"You have dealt well with Your servant, according to Your word." Psalm 119:65.

"We know not what a day will bring forth." Proverbs 27:1. Smith puts the unknown and the promise in the same sentence: we know not... but we know. The not-knowing is about the day. The knowing is about God.

"Rejoice in the Lord as our Provider." Genesis 22:14 — Abraham on the mountain: Jehovah-jireh, "the LORD will provide." The literal Hebrew is the LORD will see — He sees the need before it arrives. Matthew 6:32, which Le read ten nights ago: your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 🙏

✦ Acts 16:6-10 · Two Doors Closed, Then a Vision

"Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, after they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them."

Acts 16:6-10 · KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

The letter Le is reading began with a closed door.

Paul wanted Asia. Forbidden of the Holy Ghost. He tried Bithynia. The Spirit suffered them not. Two good plans, two closed doors, and no explanation given for either.

Then, at Troas: a vision appeared to Paul in the night. The new vision came only after the doors closed.

And that vision took him across the sea to Macedonia, to its first city: Philippi. Lydia by the river. The jailer at midnight. The church that would one day send him a gift in prison — and receive, in return, my God shall supply all your need.

The promise Le read tonight exists because two doors closed.

"Assuredly gathering." Symbibazontes — putting it together, piece by piece. Paul did not get a full map. He got a vision, and then he gathered the meaning as he went.

Le, September 16: sometimes God says No. And on September 1: we see different paths, and trust God to lead us to the right path. God is faithful to us, always. 🙏

"God is faithful to us, always. Closing the door to France, God will supply all our needs — including a new vision for the future."

Spoken to Givers

The Philippians gave out of deep poverty. Paul's promise answers them: you supplied my need — my God will supply yours.

⚖️

Need, Not Want

Le said it on September 16: Yes to His promises, not to everything I want. Every need — and the freedom to say no to a want.

🚪

He Shutteth, Too

Asia closed. Bithynia closed. Then a vision in the night — and it led to Philippi. A new vision is also a need He supplies.

Hitherto

Ebenezer — "up to here the Lord has helped." Which means: from here, too. Not one thing has failed.

"Not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof."
Joshua 23:14 · KJV
