The Word of Our God Shall Stand — A Lifetime to Understand

"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."
Isaiah 40:8 · KJV

The Lord reminded me of Isaiah 40:8.

After I received the Lord as my Savior and Lord, I had this scripture hanging on my wall. I had little understanding of what that meant. I do understand it now.

It takes a lifetime to understand the depth of this scripture. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

A second day at Neufchâtel-en-Bray — and this time Le reads in the morning.

And Smith's verse is not new to her. It is the first verse she ever hung on her wall — right after she received the Lord as her Savior.

She did not understand it then. She does now. And that is the verse proving itself. Through every move, every home, every season that withered, the words on that wall kept standing — long enough for her to grow into them.

The word did not change while she learned it. She changed.

Le, six days ago, on Psalm 91:16: the reason for a long life — to show him my salvation. Today she says the same thing from the other side: it takes a lifetime to understand the depth of this scripture. The long life is what lets the meaning unfold.

Smith six days running. And this week has a shape. October 4: wait for Him. October 5: He delivers. October 6: stand by faith. October 7: He supplies — and a door closed. October 8: He loves freely. And today: His word stands.

Plans wither. The word stands. That is the whole week in one verse.

And Smith ends with five words for anyone standing at a closed door: trust, and do not be afraid.

✦ Isaiah 40:1, 6-8 · Comfort Ye My People

"Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God... The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."

Isaiah 40:1, 6-8 · KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

Isaiah 40 opens with Comfort ye, comfort ye. The word of God standing for ever is not a cold fact. It is the comfort.

And it was spoken to exiles — like last night's Jeremiah 31:3. People far from home, their plans undone, their city gone. God's answer was not "here is your house back." It was: my word still stands.

"What shall I cry?" The prophet asks what to preach, and the first answer sounds bleak: all flesh is grass. But it is said only to set up the contrast. Everything human withers — our strength, our plans, our certainties. That is exactly why we need something that does not.

"Shall stand." Yaqum. To rise up, to stay upright, to be established. The grass lies down. The word stays standing.

And this same chapter ends with the verse Le has already met: they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength (40:31). The word that stands is what the waiting ones lean on.

✦ James Smith · Immutably the Same

"The Word of our God is like His nature — immutably the same. He says, 'My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of My lips.' Believer, this is your comfort: every promise is confirmed and shall be fulfilled."

James Smith · On Isaiah 40:8
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"Like His nature." Smith's point is simple: the word cannot be more changeable than the One who speaks it. Malachi 3:6: I am the LORD, I change not.

"Nor alter the thing that is gone out of My lips." Psalm 89:34. Once God has said it, He does not take it back.

And 1 Peter 1:24-25 quotes tonight's verse, then adds one line: and this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. Peter says: the word that stands for ever is the gospel itself — the very word that mercied Le.

Jesus said it of His own words, Matthew 24:35: heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

✦ James Smith · What Has He Said?

"But what has He said? 'Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.' 'Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.' 'No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.' 'I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.' 'I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.' 'No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.'"

James Smith · On Isaiah 40:8
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

Smith does not leave "His word" abstract. He opens the book and reads out six promises. And Le has met nearly all of them already.

"White as snow." Isaiah 1:18. Le, August 24: I was mercied.

"The LORD delivereth him out of them all." Psalm 34:19 — Smith's Deliverer, four days ago. Not out of some. Out of them all.

"I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee." Isaiah 41:10 — three verses before Isaiah 41:13: I will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not. Le's mother's song, September 24: segura na mão de Deus e vai... não temas.

"I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Hebrews 13:5 — and in Greek it is one of the strongest sentences in the New Testament. Five negatives stacked: ou mē se anō, oud' ou mē se enkatalipō. The old translators rendered it: I will never, no never, no never forsake thee. Le, four days ago: you don't step out of your comfort and find yourself alone.

"No good thing will He withhold." Psalm 84:11. Which means that what He withholds was not the good thing. Le, September 16: sometimes God says No.

✦ ✦ ✦
✦ James Smith · He Cannot Deny Himself

"All that He says comes surely to pass. Not one jot or tittle can fail. He never spoke hastily, insincerely, or unwisely. He has drawn His plan, given His Word, and everything shall answer the end He had in view. Man may be disappointed — God cannot. Man may change his mind or break his word — but God cannot. He remains faithful. He cannot deny Himself. Trust, and do not be afraid."

James Smith · On Isaiah 40:8
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"Man may change his mind — God cannot." Numbers 23:19: God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it?

And here is the comfort hidden inside a closed door. Our plans change. Our minds change. A door that looked right can close. That is the grass withering — human plans doing what human plans do. But nothing God has promised has changed.

"He has drawn His plan." Our plan withered. His did not. Jeremiah 29:11: I know the thoughts that I think toward you... thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

"He remains faithful. He cannot deny Himself." 2 Timothy 2:13: if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. His faithfulness does not even depend on ours.

Le — two nights ago: God is faithful to us, always. Smith ends exactly where you did. 🙏

✦ Psalm 119:130 · 1 Corinthians 13:12 · A Lifetime of Light

"The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple." — Psalm 119:130

"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." — 1 Corinthians 13:12

KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"The entrance of thy words giveth light." Petach — the opening, the doorway. A word enters, and light comes in with it — not all at once, but the way a room fills as a door slowly opens.

That is what happened on Le's wall. The words entered the day she hung them. The light has been coming in ever since.

"Now I know in part." Le read this on September 22. "In part" is not failure. It is the honest state of every believer this side of glory. Each year, a little more of the part. And then — face to face.

And here is the quiet gift in Le's testimony. A young believer hangs a verse she does not understand. Decades later — after a sold home, a crossing, a closed door — she finds it is the truest thing she owns. The grass withered. The flower faded. The word on the wall stayed standing. 🙏

"After I received the Lord as my Savior and Lord, I had this scripture hanging on my wall. I had little understanding of what that meant. I do understand it now. It takes a lifetime to understand the depth of this scripture."

Plans Wither, the Word Stands

Our plans change; His promises do not. He abideth faithful — He cannot deny Himself.
