I turned to Portuguese to see Tiago's heart from a different perspective.
"Tenha, porém, a paciência a sua obra perfeita, para que sejais perfeitos e completos, sem faltar em coisa alguma."
(a obra tem que ser perfeita para sermos completos e não faltar coisa alguma) 🙏
A new country tonight. The rig has crossed from Calais into Belgium, and rests among the flat Flemish polders of Zuienkerke, between Bruges and the sea.
Last night was a song: Thou art my hiding place. Tonight Smith turns to the quieter grace that lives inside the hiding place — patience.
Five nights ago Le asked God for a new vision for the future. Tonight's word is not an answer about the future. It is a word about the waiting. And the waiting, James says, is not wasted. It is working.
Le went to Tiago in her own tongue tonight, and the Portuguese showed her the order of the verse: a obra tem que ser perfeita para sermos completos. First the work is finished — then we are whole.
That is exactly the Greek. James says ergon teleion, a perfect work, so that we may be teleioi — perfect, mature, complete. The same root twice. The finished work makes the finished person. We do not hurry patience out the door half-done, because what it is building is us.
And He who builds is faithful to finish. Philippians 1:6, Le's verse from September: he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it. A good work begun — a perfect work finished — sem faltar em coisa alguma.
"Patience presupposes trials and troubles. It signifies remaining under a burden. It is opposed to fretfulness, murmuring, haste, and despair. It produces submission, silence before God, and satisfaction with His dealings. The Holy Spirit produces this grace by means of afflictions; tribulation works patience."
James Smith · On James 1:4"Remaining under a burden." Smith is translating the Greek word itself. Hypomonē — hypo, under; menō, to remain. Patience is not waiting for something to end. It is staying under it, with God, while it lasts.
"Tribulation works patience." Romans 5:3-4: tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope. The trial is the workshop. The Spirit is the craftsman.
"Silence before God." Psalm 37:7: Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself. Smith's list of opposites is almost David's word for word — fretfulness, haste.
"Let us take up and plead God's promises. Let us remember that eternal love appointed every trial and trouble; that Jesus forewarned us of tribulation; that He has set us an example which we are required to imitate."
James Smith · On James 1:4Three things to remember, and each one has a verse.
"Eternal love appointed." Not chance. Not fate. Yesterday's line from Psalm 31: My times are in thy hand. The hand that holds the times is the hand of love.
"Jesus forewarned us." John 16:33: In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. Nothing has surprised Him.
"He has set us an example." Hebrews 12:2: who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross. Endured — the same word, hypomenō. Jesus remained under. For joy.
"Impatience dishonors our profession, and grieves the Spirit. Patience benefits others, and is of great advantage to ourselves. Let us watch against temptations to impatience, and in patience possess our souls."
James Smith · On James 1:4"In patience possess our souls." Luke 21:19: In your patience possess ye your souls. Impatience hands the soul over to circumstances. Patience keeps it in God's hand — and therefore in our own.
"Perfect and entire, wanting nothing." James ends where Paul ended for Le a week ago: My God shall supply all your need. Wanting nothing. Not because every door is open — but because He is enough while we wait at it.
And for the vision Le asked for, Habakkuk 2:3: For the vision is yet for an appointed time... though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. 🙏
"A obra tem que ser perfeita para sermos completos e não faltar coisa alguma."
Le · Zuienkerke · October 12, 2026 · The finished work makes the finished person — remaining under, with Him, and wanting nothingHypomonē
To remain under. Patience is not waiting for the burden to end — it is staying under it, with God.
A Obra Perfeita
First the work is finished, then we are whole. Ergon teleion — teleioi. The Spirit is the craftsman.
He Endured
For the joy set before Him, Jesus remained under the cross. Our example, and our strength.
Though It Tarry
The vision is for an appointed time. Wait for it — it will surely come.
