The LORD Preserveth the Simple — Return unto Thy Rest

"The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me."
Psalm 116:6 · KJV
✦ From Le's Heart · Aachen · October 18, 2026

The simple heart is the one God protects.

The Lord protects the simple heart — a great blessing and grace of God. 🙏

✦ Pastor Silas · Pastoral Note

A fourth country. The rig has crossed into Germany and rests this Sunday afternoon at Aachen, the old city of Charlemagne, where his chapel has stood for twelve centuries.

And in a city of emperors, Le read the verse about the simple. Not the mighty. Not the clever. The LORD preserveth the simple.

Le put it in one line: the simple heart is the one God protects. And she asked to see where else the Scriptures speak of it. So this entry gathers them.

✦ Psalm 116:1-2, 5-9 · I Love the LORD

"I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live... Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living."

Psalm 116:1-2, 5-9 · KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"I love the LORD, because he hath heard." The psalm opens with love — and love answering. Two weeks of this journal in one line: He spoke first, He heard first, and the heart loves Him back.

"He hath inclined his ear." The picture is of someone bending down to hear a small voice. The simple do not need to shout.

"Return unto thy rest, O my soul." David speaks to his own soul, the way Le's mother sang to hers: segura na mão de Deus e vai. The soul wanders off into worry. We call it home.

✦ Pastor Silas · What "Simple" Means

The Hebrew word is pethi, from a root meaning "open." The simple person is open — unguarded, uncomplicated, without a hidden agenda.

In Proverbs, that openness can be a danger: How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? (Proverbs 1:22). An open door lets anything in.

But in the Psalms, the same openness is turned toward God — and there it becomes a blessing. The simple heart has no walls of its own, so God Himself becomes its wall. That is exactly what Le saw: the simple heart is the one God protects. And she named it rightly — not an achievement, but a great blessing and grace of God. Even simplicity is His gift.

In the New Testament, the Greek words are haplotēs — singleness, a heart not divided — and akeraios — unmixed, pure, like wine with no water added.

✦ Scriptures on the Simple Heart · The Psalms

"The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me."
Psalm 116:6

"The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple."
Psalm 19:7

"The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple."
Psalm 119:130

"LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child."
Psalm 131:1-2

KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

God does not ask the simple to become clever first. His Word does the work: making wise the simple... giving understanding unto the simple. The open heart is the one the light can enter.

Psalm 131 is the simple heart at rest — a child that has stopped fussing and simply leans. Psalm 116 says it the same way: Return unto thy rest, O my soul.

✦ Scriptures on the Simple Heart · The Words of Jesus

"I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes."
Matthew 11:25

"Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 18:3

"The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light."
Matthew 6:22

"Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."
Matthew 10:16

KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"If thine eye be single." The Greek is haplous — simple, undivided. A single eye looks at one thing. A simple heart loves one Lord. And Jesus says the result is light — full of light.

"Harmless as doves." The word is akeraioi — unmixed. Jesus does not ask His people to be naive. He asks them to be wise and pure — clear-eyed about the world, and unmixed in heart.

✦ Scriptures on the Simple Heart · The Apostles

"I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil."
Romans 16:19

"But I fear, lest by any means... your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."
2 Corinthians 11:3

"For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity... we have had our conversation in the world."
2 Corinthians 1:12

"And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart."
Acts 2:46

KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"Simple concerning evil." Paul wants the church to be expert in good and beginners in evil. Some things it is a blessing never to learn.

"The simplicity that is in Christ." The danger Paul fears is not too little cleverness — it is a heart pulled away from the plain, single devotion to Jesus.

"Gladness and singleness of heart." The first church — breaking bread, glad, undivided. That is the simple heart in community.

✦ Psalm 116:12-13 · The Cup of Salvation

"What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD."

Psalm 116:12-13 · KJV
✦ Pastor Silas · Study Notes

"What shall I render?" And the answer is the simplest one possible: I will take. The way to repay God is to receive more from Him. Only a simple heart understands that.

Psalm 116 belongs to the Hallel, Psalms 113–118, sung at Passover. On the night He was betrayed, when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives (Matthew 26:30) — very likely these very psalms. Jesus may have sung I will take the cup of salvation on the night He took the cup for us. 🙏

"The simple heart is the one God protects."
